Athletic Trainer

The Athletic Trainer is responsible for training, exercising, and arranging medical treatment for athletes. Athletic Trainers continuously evaluate athletes' conditions, injuries, and illnesses, conduct diagnostic tests and exercises, and communicate those results to medical professionals. 

 

Qualifications

  • Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in athletic training from an accredited program.
  • Certification: Board of Certification (BOC) credential (ATC).
  • Licensure: Arkansas athletic training license.
  • Life Support: Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications

 

Responsibilities:

  • Attends sports events to provide the needed on-site care
  • Attends to injuries of athletes and arranges for medical treatment. 
  • Assesses the degree of injury, describes injury, symptoms, pains, etc., and arranges for transportation to a medical facility, if necessary.
  • Conduct athlete intake assessments and maintain medical records for all athletes.
  • Coordinate with management to maintain equipment inventory
  • Attend annual conferences and weekly staff meetings
  • Develop customized treatment plans and make appropriate recommendations for ideal steps in athlete care
  • Handle clerical tasks such as assisting with budgets, restocking supplies, and maintaining inventory
  • Design rehabilitation and training programs for athletes
  • Tape and wrap joints before practices and games.
  • Check playing fields and equipment for safety hazards.
  • Teach athletes proper warm-up and stretching routines.
  • Attend all major school sports games and practices.
  • Respond immediately to on-field injuries and concussions.
  • Decide if an injured player needs an ambulance or a doctor.
  • Guide injured students through recovery exercises.
  • Help athletes return to play safely after healing.
  • Keep detailed medical records for every injury.
  • Update parents on their child's injury status.
  • Tell coaches which players are cleared to play.
  • Work with school nurses and team doctors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and use fingers, tools, or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift to 50 lbs. or more.
