Substitute Teacher



Reports to: HR Specialist

Supervises: None

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Wyoming PTSB Substitute Permit or License or certified teacher certificate

 

POSITION SUMMARY

To replace the regular classroom teacher in their absence. To provide, as closely as possible, the same

successful instructional and learning environment that would exist if the regular classroom teacher were in attendance.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow lesson plans and established curriculum provided by the regular teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for all students.
  • Follow the procedures, rules, and routines of the regular classroom teacher as described in building policy and substitute instructions left by the regular teacher.
  • Acquaint himself/herself with district and individual building policies affecting substitute teaching.
  • Maintain maximum supervision of assigned students at all times. Supervises students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground and in the cafeteria
  • May be required to do extra duties as assigned, including: recess duty, lunch duty, hall supervision or any other duties as detailed in the teachers’ schedule.
  • Confer with the office secretary/clerk upon arrival to substitute for the purpose of learning of any additional duty responsibilities (such as recess supervision).
  • Maintain a detailed, accurate, and legible account of the material covered during the regular teacher's absence. 
  • Provide written explanation if the plans of the regular teacher were not followed. 
  • Maintain a written record for the regular classroom teacher of classroom management issues that need to be known by or followed up on by the regular classroom teacher.
  • Familiarize yourself with, and follow, the building crisis plan.
  • Strive to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment. Work to create an environment of mutual respect and rapport between the substitute, students and their peers.
  • Ensure that the IEP (Individualized Education Program) for Special Education students are adhered to consistently and thoroughly. Immediately notifies the building principal or designee, if a deviation from the student’s IEP has taken place. 
  • Confer the department head, grade level teacher, or principal if there is a question about lesson plans or expectations of the substitute.
  • Long term substitutes may need to work to develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the grade or content level lesson plans and activities for the students. This will need to be done in conjunction with the department head, grade level teacher, or principal.
  • Adhere to the timelines, guidelines, and expectations documented in the current District Substitute Handbook. 
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Consistently conduct yourself in a professional, business-like and task-oriented manner. Adheres to the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board Professional Code of Conduct.
  • Remain actively on assignment during the hours assigned as a substitute.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all information concerning students, staff, or parent/guardian in any public setting and chooses the appropriate time, place, and supervisor to discuss school/substitute related issues.
  • Possess the ability to plan appropriate educational activities for students when there are no plans available or when assigned because of an emergency.
  • Are expected to turn their cell phone and other electronic devices off during class time and when supervising students.
  • Required to stay for the entire workday as scheduled. 
  • For long term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the grade or content level lesson plans and activities for the students  
  • Other duties as assigned.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as policies and regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

EVALUATION

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of certified or classified personnel.

 

SALARY SCHEDULE

This position will be paid according to the approved Substitute & Seasonal Salary Schedule. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Temporary, as needed.

 

CLEARANCES

Employment is contingent on a local, state, and federal criminal background clearance, as well as Substitute Training requirements assigned by the District.
