Wage Range: $20.29 – $24.17 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
Location: Aspirus St. Luke's Sports and Event Center, District-wide
Position Summary
The Ice Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and care of the ice rink, ice plant, arena equipment, and associated facilities at the Aspirus St. Luke's Sports & Event Center. This position ensures high-quality ice conditions for athletic, recreational, and community events while maintaining a safe environment for participants, spectators, and staff.
The Ice Technician performs specialized ice-making and ice maintenance duties, monitors and operates refrigeration and ice plant systems, assists with facility maintenance and event preparation, and supports the overall operation of the Sports & Event Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Ice Operations and Maintenance
- Operate and maintain the ice resurfacer (Zamboni) and related equipment.
- Prepare, maintain, and repair ice surfaces to ensure safe and consistent skating conditions.
- Monitor ice quality and make adjustments as needed based on usage, temperature, humidity, and scheduled events.
- Perform ice installation, removal, painting, and line marking procedures.
- Maintain dasher boards, glass systems, rink netting, goals, benches, and related rink equipment.
- Conduct routine inspections of rink surfaces and surrounding areas to identify and correct safety hazards.
Ice Plant Operations
- Monitor and operate refrigeration and ice plant systems to maintain appropriate ice temperatures and conditions.
- Maintain accurate records of ice plant operation, temperatures, pressures, and equipment performance.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on refrigeration equipment and related systems.
- Coordinate service and repairs with vendors and contractors as necessary.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, environmental requirements, and industry best practices related to ice arena operations.
Facility Maintenance and Operations
- Assist with custodial and maintenance duties throughout the Sports & Event Center.
- Set up and tear down facilities for athletic events, tournaments, meetings, community events, and other activities.
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance on facility equipment and building systems.
- Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of arena facilities, locker rooms, spectator areas, and common spaces.
- Assist with snow removal, grounds maintenance, and other seasonal duties as assigned.
Safety and Compliance
- Maintain a safe environment for staff, participants, and visitors.
- Conduct regular facility safety inspections.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and facility-related incidents.
- Follow district safety procedures and applicable OSHA standards.
- Assist with the implementation of emergency response procedures and facility security protocols.

Preferred Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Minnesota driver's license.
- Ability to obtain certification and training necessary for the operation of ice resurfacing equipment and refrigeration systems.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding work in varying environmental conditions.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and flexible schedules based on facility operations.
- Previous experience in arena operations, facility maintenance, custodial services, or related fields.
- Experience operating an ice resurfacer (Zamboni) or similar equipment.
- Knowledge of refrigeration systems, mechanical systems, and preventative maintenance practices.
- Experience working in recreational, athletic, or public facilities.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
Terms of Employment
This is a full-time, year-round position compensated at Pay Grade 11, consistent with the District's Custodial Technician classification. Employment terms and conditions shall be governed by the applicable collective bargaining agreement and district policies.
