What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2025-2026: Sign Language Interpreter: Dist position at District?
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides appropriate communication between the hearing impaired/deaf student(s) and hearing persons in the school (e/g/teachers, administrators, staff members, peers). This may include sign language, finger spelling and/or voicing.
- Provides tutoring, assistance, extra explanation and/or rephrasing for lessons as necessary for clarification of concepts.
- Becomes familiar in advance with lesson content, vocabulary, videos and/or handouts in order to be prepared for communicating/signing appropriate material to the student(s).
- Assists the classroom teacher with activities and/or equipment related to the student’s needs. (e.g. hearing aids, auditory training equipment, sound field system, TTY, closed captioning, note-taking, preferential seating).
- Provides additional interpreting for special activities or extracurricular activities.
- Aids other school personnel in understanding the educational needs, communication style and district culture of the deaf.
- Signs school wide functions during the instructional day.
- Checks hearing aides and FM monitors for proper functioning daily.
- Maintains student confidentiality at all times.
- Abides by all district policies and state and federal laws.
- Performs such other duties as assigned by supervisor.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Number of days and compensation based on Board approved support personnel salary schedule and the employee work calendars.
EVALUATION:
Job performance will be evaluated annually by the principal.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to stand, walk, squat frequently.
Ability to lift up to 10 pounds frequently.
Ability to do outside duties in inclement weather.
Ability to walk or move long distances from location to location around the building multiple times each day.
