Primary Purpose:
While working under the guidance of a cooperating teacher and/or leader, provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core subject area(s) assigned. Structure lessons and instructional delivery so that students are empowered to fulfill their individual potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop the necessary competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Bachelor’s degree completion expected within one year
University approval to participate in the residency program in lieu of a student teaching semester
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of core academic subject assigned
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Completion of university prerequisites for participation in the residency program
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
- Observe and then develop and implement lessons that fulfill the requirements of the district’s curriculum program. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual students.
- Deepen personal understanding of appropriate instructional and learning strategies. Plan and use effective instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Work with the cooperating teacher and other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
- Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
Student Growth and Development
- Assist in conducting ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Be a positive role model for students; support the mission of school district.
Classroom Management and Organization
- In partnership with the cooperating teacher, create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Develop personal skills in the area of classroom management. Learn to manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Compile, maintain, and submit all reports, records, and other documents required.
Communication
- Establish and maintain a professional relationship and respectful communication with students and colleagues. Shadow the cooperating teacher during parent conferences and staff meetings to expand personal familiarity with professional communication strategies.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in staff development activities and university sessions to improve job-related skills.
- Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers. Comply with university and district policies for resident teachers.
Other
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Complete all university program requirements successfully.
