SUMMARY: The Speech Language Pathologist serves as a specialist to support students who are found eligible for speech/language special education services as defined by IDEA. The Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for evaluating and identifying students with communication disorders that may include the areas of language, articulation, voice and fluency. The pathologist   designs and implements specialized treatment/therapy plans for qualified students through direct and indirect support to minimize the adverse impact on the individual student’s success in the general education curriculum and in the least restrictive environment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Displays knowledge and understanding of District, State and Federal procedures, policies and regulations by adherence to requirements, maintaining confidentiality and completing student records and reports accurately and on time.
  • Assesses students’ communication skills for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility and developing recommendations for therapy.
  • Coordinates meetings with parents, teachers, administrators, support personnel and other professionals to present evaluation results, determine speech and language needs, develop appropriate Individualized Education Programs, and monitor progress of students.
  • Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate; participates effectively as a team member; contributes creative solutions to problems; assumes case management responsibilities; uses training and experience to support classroom instruction.
  • Instructs assigned support staff for the purpose of providing information on communicative disorders, use of assistive devices and feeding techniques and/or implementing individual education plans.
  • Interprets medical reports within the scope of a Speech Language Pathologist practice for the purpose of providing information and ensuring that therapy/treatment goals are appropriate.
  • Develops appropriate IEPs based on students’ strengths and weaknesses, choosing materials to meet the needs, age, and cultural differences of individual students.
  • Schedules interventions using a variety of service delivery models, including classroom intervention, consultation/collaboration and pull-out as appropriate to meet student needs in the least restrictive setting.
  • Uses systematic procedures for review of student progress through the use of documentation on charts, records, and IEP progress reports.
  • Prepares a variety of manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. activity logs, correspondence, memos, Medicaid billings and other required documentation) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Researches a variety of topics including, resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students’ needs.
  • Provides speech and language services to individual and small groups of students for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of speech and language disorders on student success.
  • Provides and follows schedules for assigned schools and informs appropriate personnel of departures from schedule.
  • Participate in professional development, curriculum development meetings and ongoing training to further develop specialized skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/EXPERIENCE: Master’s degree required; however, no prior experience is required. Arkansas licensed as a speech language pathologist with appropriate code or equivalent.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of pre-employment background checks. Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students, other staff members and the general public.

Salary : $58,660 - $68,180
