Experience Preferred.  Appropriate OK certification required. 

 

TITLE: Special Education Teacher

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate endorsement (Severe/Profound or equivalent).
  • An earned bachelor's degree with a major in education; advanced coursework in special education preferred.  
  • Teaching experience as determined by the board
  • Knowledge of best practices for students with severe and profound disabilities, including functional academics, life skills, communication systems, and adaptive equipment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with related service providers, paraprofessionals, families, and administrators. 
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
  • Cannot be related to any currently seated Board of Education member within the second degree of affinity or consanguinity.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent, Special Education Director, Principal and/or Assistant Principal

 

JOB GOAL:

To provide individualized, specialized instruction and support that enables students with severe and profound disabilities to achieve maximum independence, personal growth, and quality of life academically, socially, emotionally, and functionally.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Punctually meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with state and federal regulations. 
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Employs a variety of instructional strategies, adaptive materials, assistive technology, and instructional media appropriate for students with severe and profound disabilities.
  • Provides instruction in functional academics, communication, daily living skills, social skills, and vocational or transition-related skills as appropriate.
  • Implements behavior support plans and uses positive behavior interventions consistently.
  • Supervises and collaborates with paraprofessionals to ensure effective instructional support and student safety.
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities, including health and mobility supports.
  • Recognizes students’ needs and refers, when appropriate, to school personnel and related service providers who can best help.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of student progress, data collection, and required special education records.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings, IEP meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Completes reports and other school-related paperwork as required and by the time requested.
  • Accepts responsibility for and arrives punctually for required activities and duties.
  • Works to establish and maintain open, respectful communication with students’ parents and guardians. Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with co-workers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provides for personal professional growth through reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework related to special education.
  • Plans a program of study in cooperation with administration that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Creates a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students’ developmental and physical needs within district resources.
  • Guides the learning process toward achievement of IEP goals and district curriculum objectives and communicates expectations clearly.
  • Assists administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life, health, and conduct.
  • Maintains reasonable emotional stability, physical health, and personal appearance to meet the demands of the position.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment considered annually in accordance with Oklahoma law. Salary and work year to be according to the current salary schedule.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with Oklahoma law and the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
