Profile of a Natick Educator

JOB GOAL:

The Piano Accompanist provides piano accompaniment in support of the district's vocal music programs, working collaboratively with music

teachers to support instruction, rehearsals, and performances. We believe that all children are capable of attaining high levels of educational achievement in preparation for productive, rewarding lives and responsible citizenship.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education: Preferably bachelors degree in a music program

Professional Certification: None

Specialized Knowledge / Preferred Abilities:

  • Strong piano proficiency, including the ability to sight-read at an advanced level
  • Ability to read and play multi-part vocal and instrumental scores
  • Ability to improvise and interpret accompaniments musically and sensitively at the direction of the classroom teacher or conductor
  • Working knowledge of music theory
  • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the principles and practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice as they relate to student engagement and opportunity

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience as a piano accompanist in a school, choral, or instrumental setting
  • Experience teaching in a diverse public school preferred
  • Experience working with students with disabilities/special abilities preferred
  • Experience working with students who are English language learners preferred

Skills:

  • Demonstrated aptitude for work to be performed
  • Ability to work collaboratively with music teachers, students, families, and staff
  • Candidates must be flexible and able to adapt accompaniment to the pace and needs of rehearsals and instruction
  • Well established verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Candidates must be organized and able to meet ongoing, time-sensitive deadlines for performances and events
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with state certification requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (not limited to)

  • Provide piano accompaniment for classes, rehearsals, and performances as directed by the classroom music teacher
  • Practice musical selections with individual students or small groups as needed
  • Accompany part-singing and multi-part vocal or instrumental arrangements
  • Assist the classroom music teacher in providing instruction to individual students or groups
  • Reinforce lessons and instruction provided by the teacher, including help with notes, rhythms, and reading sheet music
  • Assist with developing, preparing, and conducting special music events and performances, both during and outside the school day
  • Assume a supportive or leadership role in assisting a substitute teacher in the absence of the classroom music teacher, as needed
  • Perform related clerical duties, such as organizing sheet music and maintaining the music library
  • Practice culturally responsive communication with students, families, and colleagues
  • Any other relative duties as assigned

  • move about the classroom, school, school grounds, and/or off-site locations
  • remain in a stationary position for periods of time
  • operate a piano and other school/office productivity machinery (i.e., copy machine, computer printer, etc.)
  • read material from a computer monitor as well as handwritten or printed sheet music with or without visual aids
  • have the dexterity of hands and fingers required to play piano continuously
  • communicate with others so that information received and given is understood and accurately communicated
  • communicate and collaborate effectively with students, teachers, and other staff members in person and in writing
  • observe details at close range
  • multitask and respond to the pace and direction of the classroom teacher or conductor in real time
  • the noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud
