POSITION SUMMARY
School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- To work in conjunction with other district nursing staff
- To identify health needs of pupils and school personnel
- To help school personnel interpret health records and use the information as a tool in the guidance of students
- To maintain updated health records and current immunizations of all students in accordance with guidelines developed by the State Department of Education
- To screen students for vision, hearing, scoliosis, BMI and refer to proper specialists
- To assist in communicable disease control and reporting
- To observe and evaluate individual physical, emotional and social health, and refer as needed
- To provide teachers with up-to-date health information and facts
- To work closely with other health agencies, faculty, parents and students
- To coordinate along with Athletic Director the CPR certification of coaches/staff
- To monitor/maintain AED (monthly)
- To attend health workshops throughout the school year
- To administer first aid for sick and injured and responsible for documenting results
- To communicate with parents (written or verbal) concerning their child’s health needs- confers with physicians as needed
- To purchase first aid supplies and distribute to each campus as needed
- To provide direct and indirect teaching to students as requested
- To attend staff, team, and/or IEP meetings as needed
- To perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by employee’s supervisor, the principal, or the superintendent

Education
Minimum of Associate Degree from an accredited educational institution in Nursing. Other requirements per job description.
Experience
One (1) year of job related experience is required, preferably with children and adolescents. Other requirements per job description.
Certificates & Licenses
Valid Arkansas certificate or license as Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse with CPR/First Aid certification for compliance with the necessary requirements to meet the position’s essential duties and responsibilities.
Computer Skills
Ability to apply basic computer programs (spreadsheet, Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint, others) to enhance job performance. (Others could include APSCN, HAC/TAC, NWEA)
Other Requirements
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the school community.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all federal, state, and district requirements.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional documents. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to perform basic math operations to meet job expectations.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with situations appropriately to meet job expectations.
