Mid-day Transportation Driver (Non-CDL)

Position begins upon successful completion of pre-employment and transportation requirements. Contracted for 171 days per year @ 3.5 hours per day. Part-time - No benefits.

 

**This position does not apply to any district employee who is on duty for another position in the district at the time of transporting students.**

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

Operate a school vehicle over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students; provide safe and efficient transportation for District students to and from school, special events and field trips; perform daily inspections and operator maintenance of vehicle; assist in the loading and unloading of all students as necessary.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Provide transportation for all programs requiring mid-day transportation to include, but not limited to the following programs:
    1. Vocational School
    2. Madisonville Community College Course/Dual Credit Programs
  • Pick-up and discharge students, under varying weather conditions, at established vehicle stops; report incidents that affect the safety of students.
  • Maintain vehicle in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections and driver maintenance including cleaning windows, mirrors and vehicle interior; check and maintain fuel levels; check brakes, brake lights and doors; report mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven and number of children transported and other related matters; prepare student conduct, incident and accident reports.
  • Attends safety and preventive emergency meetings when required.
  • Maintain order and discipline among students in vehicle following district policies and procedures.
  • Perform emergency vehicle evacuation drills as required by Kentucky Administration Regulations.
  • Transport physically handicapped and mentally handicapped children to and from designated locations; lift and secure wheel chairs; assist in the loading and unloading of handicapped children as necessary.
  • Observe applicable local, state and federal policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Utilize two-way radio for district transportation communication.
  • Perform first aid according to established guidelines and procedures.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

      KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Provisions of the State Motor Vehicle Code and Kentucky Administration.
  • Regulations applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students.
  • Interpersonal skills using tack, patience and courtesy.

      ABILITY TO:

  • Operate a school vehicle over designated routes in accordance with the time schedules, picking up and discharging students.
  • Maintain order and discipline among students while driving a school vehicle.
  • Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition.
  • Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action.
  • Learn designated vehicle routes including stops and traffic hazards.
  • Maintain routine records.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Meet schedules and time lines.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Learn, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Assist in loading and unloading handicapped children as necessary.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to:  high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and one year experience in the operation of a motor vehicle.

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

A valid Kentucky driver’s license; must pass driving record check; initial drug screen and random drug screening pool throughout year; CPR and first-aid training; and three hour initial transportation training

FOR THIS TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT, STATE LAW REQUIRES A NATIONAL (FBI) AND STATE (KSP) FINGERPRINT SUPPORTED CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUND CHECK AND A LETTER FROM THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES STATING THE EMPLOYEE IS CLEAR TO HIRE BASED ON NO FINDINGS OF SUBSTANTIATED CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT FOUND THROUGH A BACKGROUND CHECK OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT (CAN) RECORDS MAINTAINED BY THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT. KRS 160.380

 

As a condition of initial employment, all employees shall pass a medical examination. The medical examination shall be reported on the form required by Kentucky Administrative Regulation available at the Board of Education office. The examination shall be provided by a licensed physician, physician assistant (PA), or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Each medical examination shall include a risk assessment for tuberculosis as required by Kentucky Administrative Regulation. Individuals identified by that assessment as being at high risk for TB shall be required to undergo a tuberculin skin test. 702 KAR 001:160

 

All applicants being considered for employment shall be required to submit to a urinalysis test for the detection of illegal use of drugs and alcohol. An applicant refusing to complete any part of the drug testing procedure will not be considered a valid candidate for employment with the District, and such will be considered as a withdrawal of the individual’s application for employment. If substance screening shows a confirmed positive result for which there is no current physician’s prescription, a second confirming test may be requested by the HRC. If the first or any requested second confirming test is positive, any current job offer will be revoked. The applicant will not be permitted to reapply for employment with the District for at least twelve (12) months and not until the applicant shows proof of successful completion of a drug rehabilitation program or proof that the applicant is no longer engaging in illegal drug use. As a condition of initial employment, all employees shall complete training for the use of physical restraint and seclusion in school districts. 704 KAR 7:160
