Lead Custodian - 2nd Shift

Job Summary: The Lead Custodian - 2nd Shift is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and well-functioning school environment that supports student learning and staff productivity. This role performs and oversees daily cleaning, sanitization, light maintenance, and groundskeeping activities while providing day-to-day leadership to custodial staff, including assigning tasks and ensuring work is completed efficiently and to standard. The Lead Custodian supports building operations by opening and securing facilities, preparing spaces for meals, meetings, and events, and responding to alarms or emergencies as needed. Additionally, this position maintains equipment and supplies, follows all safety and sanitation procedures, and interacts professionally with students, staff, and visitors to ensure a safe, orderly, and sanitary environment conducive to learning.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Lead and supervise assigned custodial shift operations, including scheduling, assigning, and coordinating daily work; monitor performance, ensure tasks are completed to standard, and provide guidance and support to custodial staff under the direction of the Director of Facilities.
2. Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment by ensuring all areas—including classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, gyms, hallways, and common spaces—are cleaned and sanitized according to established standards.
3. Open and secure school facilities as assigned, including conducting safety checks, monitoring building conditions (e.g., temperature), raising flags, and identifying or reporting hazards or vandalism.
4. Oversee and participate in the setup and teardown of spaces for daily operations and special events, including lunches, meetings, performances, athletic events, and outside group use.
5. Coordinate building use for outside organizations by ensuring proper space preparation, monitoring activities, and directing groups to appropriate areas.
6. Perform and oversee routine custodial and minor maintenance tasks, including replacing light bulbs and ballasts, changing air filters, tightening fixtures, and operating plumbing shut-offs; report larger repair needs promptly.
7. Maintain custodial equipment, tools, and supplies, including proper use, storage, inventory control, and ordering of materials.
8. Monitor high-traffic areas, ensure timely response to spills or accidents, replenish supplies, and manage trash and recycling removal.
9. Supervise and assist with groundskeeping duties, including mowing, trimming, trash removal, and snow and ice removal to maintain safe access to facilities.
10. Direct and participate in summer and deep-cleaning projects, including furniture removal, floor care (stripping, waxing, buffing), carpet cleaning, and detailed cleaning of all areas.
11. Respond to alarms and emergencies as required, including participation in on-call rotations, and ensure appropriate staff response during assigned shifts.
12. Maintain clear and effective communication with supervisors, administrators, and custodial staff regarding building conditions, schedules, and priorities.
13. Enforce safety, sanitation, and chemical-handling procedures, ensuring compliance among custodial staff and maintaining professional interactions with students, staff, and visitors.
14. Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor(s) or building principal.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma required
• Some experience in custodial work preferred
• Must possess valid PA driver’s license
• Knowledge and understanding of various cleaning chemicals preferred
• Submission of pre-employment medical examination (Section 148 of the PA School Code)
• Submission of the following clearances:
  • PA State Criminal History Record
  • PA Child Abuse History Clearance
  • Federal (FBI) Background Check
• Such alternative qualifications as the Board may deem appropriate and acceptable
