Educational Sign Language Interpreter

In-Person

Full or Part-Time

 

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

 

Applicants will be considered in the following order of preference:

  1. Holds a current Wyoming Educational Sign Language Interpreter (ESLI) Permit through the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB). The permit may be obtained by meeting at least one of the following: (a) institutional recommendation from an accredited higher-education program, (b) documented national certification, or (c) a score of 3.5 or greater on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) in American Sign Language (ASL), Manually-Coded English (MCE), or Pidgin Sign Language (PSE).
  2. Currently eligible to hold the Wyoming ESLI Permit through PTSB under any of the pathways listed above.
  3. Demonstrates the potential to meet the requirements for the Wyoming ESLI Permit within one year of hire.

Compensation:

Negotiable based on type of service, qualifications, and experience.

 

Description of the Position:

  • Districtwide position supervised through the Department of Special Services
  • Reports to the building principal and is under the guidance of special education staff
  • Daily Hours: Minimum of Three Hours, up to 7.5 Hours a day

 

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpreter assistance to the students who qualify for services under Hearing Disability
  • Effectively facilitate communication between individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing and those who are hearing
  • Possess a high level of fluency in American Sign Language and the English Language
  • Keen ability to focus on what is being said
  • Broad-based world knowledge and professional, ethical conduct
  • Serves all parties in the communication exchange
  • Ability to assess the communication preferences or language level of the individual who is deaf or hard of hearing and then adapt their interpretation to meet these needs
  • Understand the meaning and intentions expressed in one language and express those meanings and intentions in the other language
  • Ability to retain information and manage the flow of communication
  • Understand and manage the cultural nuances of the environment
  • Engage in professional and ethical standards consistent with their profession
  • Other duties within the scope and expectations of an Educational Sign Language Interpreter

In accordance with policy GBEC and procedure GBEC-R all new employees must submit to a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
