Title: Building and Grounds Maintenance

 

Purpose: The Building and Grounds Maintenance position maintains school buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure full and productive use of district facilities. To accomplish these tasks the Building and Grounds Maintenance person must work closely with the Building and Grounds Director.

 

Qualifications: Knowledge of turf management, initiating use of pesticides, and regulations to applicable safety and hazard codes.  Valid Kansas driver’s license, knowledge of proper working of lawn care equipment.  General knowledge of building maintenance practices. Ability to work independently and time management skills.  General knowledge of horticulture and tree care.  Ability to communicate well so as to maintain a professional working relationship with district staff, vendors and the general public.

 

Reports to: Building and Grounds Director

 

Rate of Pay: Established based on experience

 

Hours Per Week: 40 (fulltime)

Essential Functions:
  • Ability to maintain school grounds in top condition to ensure full and productive use of district facilities.
  • Ability to ensure all activities conform to District guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and community.
  • Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to operate all equipment and machinery appropriately as necessary.
  • Ability to work to implement the vision and mission of the District.

 

  • Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Ability to manually lift a maximum of 100 pounds.
  • Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, climbing, balancing, and reaching.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather and conditions.
  • Must occasionally work in noisy and crowded environments, with numerous interruptions.
  • Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
  • May work at all hours of a day/night for snow removal or other tasks.
  • Must be able to work around chemicals, pesticides, grass, and all manner of plants and weeds. Able to work around construction sites, and paint fumes

 

This position was created to maintain and upgrade existing grounds, sports fields and playgrounds.  Maintenance requirements include High School, Middle School, Central Elementary, West Elementary, District Office, and sports complex, or 60 acres of building and grounds.  Maintenance of numerous pieces of equipment is essential.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Mow, trim and maintain all school and sports grounds.
  • Maintain a watering and fertilizing program on all sports turf and all surrounding buildings.
  • Maintain all sidewalks and parking areas at all facilities.
  • Maintain all trees and shrubs on school grounds.
  • Maintain an aeration and overseed program on all sports fields on a yearly basis and building grounds as directed.
  • Prepare and line football, softball and baseball fields for all ball games as needed.  Prepare fields and throwing areas for cross country and track events.
  • Assist with trash and debris cleanup for the district.
  • Be able to respond in the event of emergencies.
  • Responsible for all snow removal on all sidewalks and parking lots throughout the district.
  • Repair and maintain all grounds maintenance equipment, building owned equipment where feasible.
  • Build and maintain all security fences throughout the district.
  • Maintain interior and exterior of buildings to include replacement of doors, locks, replacement of tile, paint interior and exterior as needed.
  • Assist other maintenance personnel where requested.
  • Be willing to attend trainings to increase personal knowledge and skills
  • Maintain and install all traffic signs and ADA signs with the district.
  • Maintain all parking lot striping throughout the district.
  • Maintain district sprinkler systems.
  • Provide annual safety inspections on playground equipment and outdoor bleachers and repair when necessary.
  • Spray for weed control along fence lines, on grounds and around buildings.
  • Apply pesticide as needed to district grounds.
  • Maintain the district track and all facilities that are part of the district sports complex.
  • Move equipment and materials within and between school buildings when requested.
  • Be available to work overtime when emergencies arise in order to prevent disruption of the schools.
  • Observe and follow all school district policies at all times.
  • Respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
  • Keep information and records confidential.
  • Implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Assist in assigned projects as determined by the Building and Grounds Director.
  •  Other duties as assigned.

Evaluation: Performance effectiveness will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of Kansas Statutes and Board of Education Policy.
