What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at District Partners?
District Partners is engaged with a growing, privately held services organization seeking a highly motivated, technically strong Controller to lead our accounting function and play a pivotal role in our continued growth.
This is not your typical Controller position. We’re looking for an ambitious accounting professional who thrives in an entrepreneurial environment, takes ownership without waiting for direction, and is excited by the opportunity to build, improve, and scale an accounting function.
The right individual will bring a strong public accounting foundation, hands-on accounting leadership or advisory experience, and a genuine desire to grow alongside the business.
This role offers direct exposure to executive leadership, significant autonomy, and the opportunity to develop into a broader financial or executive leadership position as the organization evolves.
What You'll be Owning:
- Lead and oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger management, reconciliations, and monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
- Ensure timely, accurate, GAAP-compliant financial reporting and maintain the integrity of financial information
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve accounting policies, internal controls, and procedures
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and working capital activities
- Identify and execute opportunities for process improvement, systems optimization, and automation
- Build scalable accounting processes and infrastructure to support continued organizational growth
- Manage and develop internal accounting resources while effectively utilizing outsourced and administrative support
- Coordinate external audit, tax, and compliance activities
- Collaborate closely with executive leadership to provide financial insights, address operational challenges, and support informed decision-making
- Take initiative in identifying inefficiencies, implementing solutions, and strengthening overall financial operations
What You'll Bring to the Table:
- Active CPA designation highly preferred
- Approximately 6–10 years of progressive accounting experience preferred
- Strong public accounting foundation, ideally with a reputable regional, national, or Big Four accounting firm preferred
- Experience in one of the following areas:
- Industry Accounting Leadership: Progression from public accounting into an Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or Controller position within a small to midsized, preferably service-based organization
- Accounting Advisory: Experience in accounting advisory, outsourced controllership, or client accounting services supporting privately held businesses, preferably in service-based industries
- Strong technical accounting knowledge, including GAAP, financial reporting, month-end close, and internal controls
- Experience working in entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and resource-conscious business environments
- Ability to balance hands-on execution with strategic thinking, leadership, and delegation
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the confidence to work directly alongside senior executives
- A proactive, solutions-oriented approach with a high degree of accountability and ownership
What We Offer:
- Executive-Level Exposure: Work directly with senior leadership and play a meaningful role in the organization’s continued development
- Opportunity to Build and Innovate: Take ownership of modernizing our accounting function, implementing automation, and developing scalable processes
- Long-Term Career Growth: Opportunity to progress into broader financial leadership or executive-level responsibilities as the business expands
- Performance-Driven Compensation: Competitive base salary, performance-based bonus opportunities, and a structured approach to compensation growth
- Entrepreneurial Environment: Join a collaborative, ambitious leadership team that values initiative, accountability, resourcefulness, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves
Who Will Thrive Here:
- We’re looking for someone who sees challenges as opportunities, takes initiative without being asked, and wants to have a direct impact on the success of a growing organization
- You should be equally comfortable digging into the details, challenging existing processes, leading improvements, and collaborating with executive leadership
- This is a high-ownership, high-expectation environment that rewards individuals who are motivated, adaptable, and genuinely invested in the success of the business
- If you’re a technically strong CPA with an entrepreneurial mindset and the ambition to build something meaningful, we’d love to hear from you
Salary : $140,000 - $160,000
