Role Description The Special Education/Resource Teacher PK-1 provides individualized and small-group instruction to students in pre-kindergarten through first grade who receive special education services. This full-time, on-site role in Washington, DC involves planning and delivering lessons aligned with individualized education programs (IEPs), adapting curriculum and materials, and using data to monitor student progress. The teacher collaborates closely with general education teachers, related service providers, and school leaders to support inclusive practices and create developmentally appropriate learning environments. Daily responsibilities include ongoing family communication, participation in IEP meetings, documentation of services, and implementation of behavior and classroom management strategies that support social-emotional growth. The role also includes engaging in professional learning, complying with district and federal special education guidelines, and contributing to a positive, culturally responsive school community.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in Pre-K- 1st Grade Education and Special Education, including knowledge of IEPs, early childhood instructional strategies, and relevant federal and local regulations.
- Ability to apply Applied Behavior Analysis and other evidence-based interventions to support student behavior, engagement, and learning.
- Excellent Communication skills for collaborating with colleagues, families, and multidisciplinary teams, and for documenting student progress and services.
- Demonstrated experience Working With Children in PK-1 settings, including understanding of child development, early literacy and numeracy, and social-emotional learning.
- Valid teaching certification or eligibility for certification in Special Education or Early Childhood Special Education (DC or transferable from another state).
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices in diverse school communities.
- Strong organizational skills, including lesson planning, progress monitoring, and time management in a school environment.
- Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and to use data to inform instructional decisions.
