If you want to become a Partner, joining a smaller firm can give you the chance to understand the business you might one day help lead.
The people. The clients. The decisions behind how it runs.
This firm is around 25 people, so you’ll get to know everyone and work closely with the Partners from the start. You’ll have room to contribute, whether that’s helping someone develop, improving how an engagement runs or bringing a fresh perspective to the practice.
They’re looking for an experienced Audit Manager who wants to grow into Partnership over the next three to five years. Succession planning is already happening, and this hire is part of that plan.
You’ll become another go to person in the audit team, leading engagements, reviewing financial statements and helping colleagues build their confidence and experience.
The clients are mainly closely held and family owned businesses, including manufacturing and construction companies across the Midwest. You're looking at revenues of $20m to $75m, with some larger businesses and startups in the mix too.
You’ll get to know the owners properly. What they’re building, what they want for their families and what they’re hoping to do next. Those conversations matter here, because understanding the person behind the business helps you give them better advice.
That same approach carries through to the team. It’s hybrid, but you’ll need to enjoy being in the office and spending time with your colleagues. If you like knowing who you work with and being able to pull up a chair to talk something through, you’ll appreciate the smaller firm feel.
Busy season is around 55 to 65 hours at this level. Outside of that, you’re looking at around 35 to 40, with the office closed on Fridays during the summer.
And there’s something a little different to help you make use of your time outside work.
Through their Dream Manager programme, you earn a fund each year equivalent to 2% of your gross income to put towards something that matters to you.
One colleague hiked the Inca Trail and explored the Amazon. Another took his dad to Rome for the Ryder Cup.
Yours might be something completely different. The firm gives you some funding and encouragement to get it off the wishlist.
You’ll need a CPA, around eight to ten years of public accounting experience, and experience managing audits and reviewing financial statements. Just as importantly, you’ll enjoy building relationships, developing people and working towards becoming a Partner.
