A smaller firm can be a really good place to start your tax career.

Assuming they actually have the time to teach you.

This Detroit CPA firm is growing, but they're pretty careful about how they do it.

They hire before they're desperate and they'll turn work away if the client isn't a good fit, rather than taking everything on and leaving the team to deal with it later.

For someone earlier in their career, that means you'll actually have people around you who have time to answer questions, review your work properly and help you get better.

You'll work with a mix of small and mid sized businesses, high net worth individuals and plenty of real estate clients, so there's a good variety to learn from too.

The hours are sensible by public accounting standards.

Around 50 to 55 hours in February, then 55 to 60 through March and April. Outside of busy season, it's generally around 40.

And because it's a smaller firm, you won't be miles away from the people making the decisions.

You'll work closely with more experienced members of the team, get exposure to clients as you develop and have room to take on more as you get better.

They're growing too, so there's somewhere for your career to go with them.
