I'm Ryan Jaiswal at Distinct Recruitment. I'm hiring a general liability defense associate for a client firm's Orlando office, and this role is fully office based. For the right person, that's the attraction.
The role
• General liability defense: premises liability, negligent security, products and commercial liability claims
• Owning a caseload from the first report through to resolution
• Taking depositions, including corporate representatives and experts
• Arguing motions and hearings yourself
• Trial preparation and courtroom experience, with first chair work as you build your record
• Regular contact with adjusters, insureds and the partners who manage the client relationships
Requirements
• 2 years of litigation experience in Florida, insurance defense preferred
• Florida Bar license
• Someone who likes learning by doing, alongside people who are good at this
The case for experience
This role isn't pitched at one level. A senior associate or counsel will take on the more significant files, lead trial teams, supervise and train others and grow real client relationships, which matters when partnership conversations come round. The salary range is wide by design so that experienced attorneys aren't underpaid.
Pay and hours
• $120,000 to $200,000, depending on experience
• 1,900 billable hours a year
• In the office in Orlando, alongside the team
• Progression toward partnership based on what you build
General liability is where defense lawyers learn breadth. In an office where you can turn round and ask an experienced trial lawyer how they'd handle a tricky witness, you learn it faster, and you're far more likely to be the one asked to handle the witness next time.
