Temporary Facilities and Exhibit Maintenance Lead

Reports to: Director of Public Engagement
Works closely with: Exhibits Fabricator

Duration: Approximately one month, from the end of August through the end of September
Pay: $24.00 - 28.00 per hour, depending on experience
Schedule: Approximately 40 hours per week

Position Summary

The Temporary Facilities and Exhibit Maintenance Lead will provide day-to-day facilities coverage during a temporary absence of the Facilities Manager. This position will respond to maintenance issues, complete general repairs, coordinate outside vendors, monitor building systems, and help ensure that the museum remains clean, safe, and operational.

A significant part of this position will involve working closely with the Exhibits Supervisor to paint and finish a new museum exhibit. The ideal candidate is a skilled and detail-oriented painter who can properly prepare surfaces, create clean and consistent finishes, and complete work efficiently in an active museum environment. The candidate should also have general building maintenance experience and be comfortable independently assessing and prioritizing facilities concerns.

Essential ResponsibilitiesExhibit Painting and Installation

• Work closely with the Exhibits Supervisor to paint and finish a new museum exhibit.
• Prepare surfaces by cleaning, sanding, filling holes, patching imperfections, priming, masking, and completing other necessary preparation.
• Apply paint using brushes, rollers, or other appropriate methods to create smooth, consistent, professional-quality finishes.
• Produce clean lines, even coverage, and careful detail work.
• Follow exhibit plans, color selections, and direction from the Exhibits Supervisor.
• Protect surrounding exhibits, flooring, equipment, and public areas during painting.
• Maintain a clean and organized painting area and properly store or dispose of materials.
• Assist with exhibit construction, installation, repair, and finishing work as needed.

Facilities and Maintenance Coverage

• Conduct regular walkthroughs of public areas, offices, meeting rooms, exhibits, and back-of-house spaces to identify maintenance or safety concerns.
• Communicate needs with a team of two janitors.
• Respond to and prioritize urgent and routine facilities requests.
• Complete general repairs within the employee’s experience and qualifications, including patching and painting walls, minor plumbing repairs, flooring work, furniture repair, and other light maintenance.
• Monitor mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, elevator, fire protection, and other building systems for signs of problems.
• Promptly report building emergencies, safety hazards, system failures, or repairs requiring a licensed professional.
• Coordinate with approved contractors and vendors, including scheduling visits, providing building access, communicating the scope of work, and documenting completed services.
• Assist with preventive maintenance tasks according to established schedules and procedures.
• Safely use appropriate hand and power tools. Operate lifts or specialized equipment only when properly trained and authorized.

• Monitor facilities supplies and communicate purchasing needs before essential materials run out.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance requests, completed work, outstanding issues, vendor visits, and follow-up needs.
• Provide regular updates to the Director of Public Engagement regarding urgent concerns, completed work, and unresolved facilities needs.
• Support cleaning and janitorial needs when necessary to maintain safe and presentable museum spaces.
• Follow all museum safety policies, standard operating procedures, and emergency protocols.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated skill and experience with interior, construction, scenic, exhibit, or comparable professional painting.
• Strong knowledge of surface preparation, priming, paint application, touch-ups, and finish work.
• Ability to produce clean, consistent, and detail-oriented painting results.
• Previous experience in commercial building maintenance, facilities operations, construction, exhibit fabrication, or a related trade.
• Working knowledge of general plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, and repair practices.
• Ability to troubleshoot facilities issues and determine when a qualified vendor is needed.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing maintenance and exhibit needs.
• Ability to work independently while following exhibit plans and direction.
• Experience safely operating common hand and power tools.
• Basic computer skills for documenting work and communicating by email.
• High school diploma or equivalent required. Trade school education or relevant certification is preferred.
• Ability to successfully complete a background check.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record if operating a museum vehicle is required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• Ability to work effectively in a busy, public-facing museum environment.
• Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined or elevated spaces as necessary.
• Ability to remain on one’s feet and perform painting work for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and carry supplies, equipment, and materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to safely use ladders, hand tools, power tools, brushes, and rollers.
• Ability to distinguish colors and identify inconsistencies in paint coverage and finish quality.
• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to safety concerns and building emergencies.
• Occasional work outside normal operating hours may be required. Any overtime must be approved in advance unless responding to an immediate emergency.
