The Court Access Navigator advances DLC’s mission by working to ensure that individuals with disabilities can fully and fairly participate in court proceedings. This position provides support in identifying and requesting reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities who are parties to court cases. The Court Access Navigator is a new position with Disability Law Colorado that is part of a pilot project to assist individuals in obtaining reasonable accommodations in court to ensure due process and equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities to participate in courts. This pilot is being launched in Pueblo. This position is contingent upon receiving grant funding.

Key Responsibilities: Court Access Navigator

The Court Access Navigator supports individuals with disabilities in accessing and navigating court systems, while also working to identify and address systemic barriers. This role combines direct support, collaboration, and advocacy.

Reasonable Accommodation Support

  • Assist unrepresented individuals with disabilities in identifying, requesting, and obtaining reasonable accommodations in court.
  • Provide guidance to attorneys, advocates, and service providers on disability-related accommodations and effective client support.
  • Serve, when appropriate, as a neutral court support person by accompanying individuals to court, helping them understand proceedings, taking notes, summarizing key information, and assisting with tracking court dates and next steps.

Court Monitoring & Systems Improvement

  • Observe court proceedings to better understand accessibility practices and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify and document systemic barriers affecting people with disabilities in court.
  • Build relationships with court staff, attorneys, and advocates to promote accessibility and improve court experiences.

Collaboration & Program Implementation

  • Partner with community organizations and legal service providers to connect individuals with Court Access Navigation services.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams to support program goals and broader organizational priorities.
  • Track services provided, issues identified, and outcomes to support program evaluation and grant reporting.

Outreach & Education

  • Represent the organization in community outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Develop and deliver trainings on disability rights and court accessibility.
  • Create and update written and multimedia materials to support education and outreach.
  • Collaborate with communications staff to support public awareness and media efforts.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Court Access Navigator reports directly to one of DLC’s Co-Legal Directors. The Court Access Navigator has no direct reports.

Required Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The individual must also possess these qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an area related to social services, disability, or the law.
  • Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated area plus 3 years of experience in a related area (i.e. social services, court services, disability services).
  • Ability to regularly attend court or meet with community partners in Pueblo.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Commitment to disability justice, equity, and self-advocacy.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are highly desired to advance DLC’s work, but they are not required:

  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Experience with disability rights or court systems.

Work Environment

This position is based in Colorado. Candidates must reside in Colorado or be willing to relocate prior to their start date. DLC offers a flexible work environment. This position is expected to work remotely with regular in person work required in Pueblo Courts or meeting with community partners. DLC provides equipment to employees to work successfully in a remote environment, including, but not limited to, laptops and phones.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The hiring range for this position is $32.05-36.75 hourly, depending on experience.
