What are the responsibilities and job description for the Advocacy Specialist position at Disability Law Colorado?
The Advocacy Specialist serves as the first point of contact for individuals seeking assistance from DLC and plays a critical role in assessing needs, providing guidance, and connecting people to appropriate resources. This position provides access to DLC’s services through effective intake, issue identification, and short-term advocacy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are an overview of the primary duties and responsibilities of the Advocacy Specialist and should not be considered an all-inclusive list.
Intake Management & Support
- Respond to calls, emails, online intakes, and mailed intakes to gather relevant information for legal team to determine next steps.
- Provide information, referrals, and technical assistance.
- Maintain expertise in the Disability Advocacy Database (DAD) case management system and correctly log all intake information.
- Provide input for discussion about intakes at weekly team meetings.
Direct Advocacy Assistance
- Provide self-advocacy and short-term assistance to people with disabilities.
- Directly advocate on behalf of individuals with disabilities, as appropriate, under the guidance of a DLC attorney.
- Maintain basic knowledge of current statutes, regulations, and policies affecting people with disabilities.
Outreach & Communications
- Assist the legal team in updating relevant self-advocacy resources.
- Demonstrate a commitment to customer service, including eliciting feedback through surveys and conversations.
- Provide trainings on disability rights.
- Represent DLC in community outreach, coalitions, and public forums.
Administrative
- Coordinate incoming and outgoing mail related to intake and self-advocacy
- Manage electronic documents and maintain documents per office protocol.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Advocacy Specialist reports directly to the Director of Mission Support. The Advocacy Specialist has no direct reports.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The individual must also possess these qualifications:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Experience interacting with members of the public in a customer service or similar environment, particularly those who are upset or experiencing a crisis.
- Experience conducting triage of client needs in a fast-paced
- Proficiency with office technology, databases, Microsoft Suite applications, and online meeting platforms.
- Determination of suitability from the Social Security Administration within the first six months of employment and the ability to preserve that credential during the course of employment.
- Commitment to disability justice, equity, and self-advocacy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The following qualifications are highly desired to advance DLC’s work, but they are not required:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- Experience gathering and entering information into a database. At least two (2) years of experience advocating with or for people with disabilities and/or other marginalized populations.
- Fluency in Spanish.
- Experience working with ASL interpreters, assistive technology, people whose primary language is not English, and accessibility problem-solving.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is based in Colorado. Candidates must reside in Colorado or be willing to relocate prior to their start date. DLC offers a flexible work environment, with the option to work remotely or from our Denver office. DLC provides equipment to employees to work successfully in a remote environment, including, but not limited to, laptops and phones.
DLC promotes a mostly remote work environment, with the understanding that employees will travel and meet in person as needed for conducting their job functions and collaborating with other staff members, the Board, clients, and partners.
Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The pay rate is $25 to $30/hour, depending on experience.
