Position Summary:
Reporting DGI’s Chairman and CEO, and under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President of Finance provides both strategic and hands-on leadership, is responsible for financial strategy decisions, oversees budgeting, financial modeling and analysis, accounting practices and procedures, and all borrowing, investing and cash management functions. This position is responsible for leading DGI’s finance, accounting, and audit functions, and ensuring the right organization structures, people, tools and strategies are in place. The Vice President of Finance will formulate and execute financing strategies to meet capital and operational funding requirements. They will serve as key advisors to DGI’s board of directors and board committees and work with CEO and Investments, DGI relationship with lending institutions. The Vice President of Finance is also responsible for coordinating monthly and year end closing processes, maintaining fiscal records, preparing financial statements, and ensuring the effective operation/utilization of DGI’s financial systems as its lead user. Last, the Vice President of Finance is a key contributor to the formulation and execution of the organization’s long term strategic plan.
Position Responsibilities:
- Accurate and timely reporting of month-end activities, including general ledger maintenance, balance sheet reconciliations and indirect expense allocations.
- Manage and coordinate all fiscal reporting activities for the organization including but not limited to revenue/expense and balance sheet reports, reports to federal, state and county funding agencies, management of licensing contracts, donor funding reporting.
- Ensure the maintenance and enhancement of financial and accounting systems, processes, and internal controls as well as external audits to safeguard financial assets of the organization and oversee federal awards and programs.
- Oversee the coordination and activities of independent auditors ensuring the preparation of the annual financial statements is in accordance with U.S. GAAP and federal, state and other required supplementary schedules and information.
- Assure compliance with federal, state and county accounting as well as compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Oversee the internal audit function.
- Oversight of payroll administration and contractor payment processes, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant execution in coordination with Human Resources.
- Build scalable finance processes, systems and internal controls that support growth and efficient operations.
- Directly responsible for filings with IRS and other governmental agencies relating to financial matters.
- Lead the organization’s budget development process, assuring timeliness and accuracy. Assure adequate financial tools are provided to ensure timely budget management and appropriate controls exist to prevent budget variance.
- Prepare and present to CEO and Board monthly financial status analysis including reasons for variances, anticipated issues/opportunities, and strategic and tactical recommendations for addressing issues/opportunities.
- Participate and perform analysis of financial implications in developing new business/service/acquisitions; assist the CEO in identifying new funding opportunities (public and private); draft prospective programmatic budgets and determine cost effectiveness.
- Manage cash flow and forecasting.
- Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.
- Optimize the handling of banking relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash positions. Leads long range planning and the development of multi-year capital budgets.
- Oversee investment portfolio and provide expert guidance and recommendations to CEO and Board on potential portfolio optimization and risk management strategies.
- Partner with investor relations function on financial implications of major investment commitments.
- Mentor and develop finance, accounting, information services, and operations support teams, assuring the development of needed technical skills, effective performance management, work allocation, organizational structure & cost, succession capabilities and morale.
- Oversee all financial accounting; work closely with department heads to ensure that expenditure is consistently aligned with company objectives and budgets throughout the period.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance/accounting required; CPA and/or MBA in Finance highly desired.
- Minimum of 15 years experience as senior financial leadership positions, with regular direct CEO and Board interaction.
- Experience in start-up financial management, working in biotech or medical or AI industry.
- Experience with accounting, financial and project management systems in complex organizations, demonstrated proven success as a financial leader. Previous experience with QuickBooks Accounting System and ADP RUN a plus.
- Must be willing to roll up their sleeves, be hands on and willing to work on day to day tasks as needed by the department
- Demonstrated track record with strategic financial planning, financial and investment management, debt financing and management, and cash flow management.
- Experience with stock options and ESOP highly desirable.
- Effective and persuasive communicator – both written and oral – with a track record of engagement with multiple and diverse stakeholders.
- Adept at managing conflict and competing agendas.
- Effective teaching and mentoring skills.
