PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Manager of Social Ministry and Community Outreach and guided by the mission and vision of the diocese, the Human Dignity Advocate will promote, guide, and assist in implementing efforts which respond and address the needs of the 16 counties of the diocese as well as the priorities as identified by the Bishop. The position will champion the rights of the marginalized and promote social justice and equality. The position will serve as the advocate for human dignity issues with state and federal lawmakers, other non-profit agencies, and Catholic social justice organizations and committees. The position will work with parish and school leadership to enhance the understanding of Catholic beliefs as they relate to areas of social justice concerns. The position will represent Catholic Charities on various local and state committees on areas related to human dignity (homelessness, human trafficking, and community integration following incarceration, etc.). In addition, the position will assist Catholic Charities and diocesan mission teams with social justice issues.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Degree in Social Justice, Human Rights, International Relations, or closely related field.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience working in advocacy or social justice area (preferred).
  • Must be a practicing Catholic and a member in good standing.
  • General understanding of Catholic Social Teaching as interpreted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
  • General understanding of issues facing the marginalized and those less fortunate in society.
  • General understanding of issues facing the immigrant and refugee populations.
  • General understanding of issues facing the unborn and those at end of life.
  • General understanding of political and governmental systems, legislative processes, and lobbying regulations and strategies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office software, internet research, and general office equipment use.
  • Proven skills in the development of clear and concise messaging and communication, including written documents and public presentations.
  • Skilled in listening and understanding the messages and positions of others.
  • Demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Skills in delegation, problem solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and relationship building.
  • Ability to pay attention to complex details with the ability to distill these details down to messaging that can be understood by most readers or listeners.
  • Ability to create relationships which build and encourage collaboration in dealing with a variety of issues.
  • Ability to work independently but equally able to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while ensuring timely completion of work assigned.
  • Ability to give and take direction with the ability to seek input and support when needed.
  • Ability to handle pressure from the community as it relates to differing opinions or positions on issues.
  • Ability to embrace the mission and vision of the Diocese of Green Bay and work within the parameters of Catholic Social Teaching and the moral and ethical values of the Catholic Church.
  • Ability to work with Catholic advocacy groups and agencies to direct public policy.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams and parish leaders on a variety of social issues.
