Description:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Multi-Media/Communications and in accordance with established policies and procedures, assists the Director of Communications with overall communications duties with a specialization in producing the East Texas Catholic Magazine. Collaborates with the Director in developing and implementing the social media strategy for the Diocese. Collaborate with the Director on maintaining and updating the diocesan website.

East Texas Catholic - Magazine

  • Create content, text, photos and graphics.
  • Attend and cover events, take photos & write stories.
  • Setup and execute interviews for stories and produce story with necessary accompaniments such as photos and graphics.
  • Work with the designer on the layout of the pages.
  • Complete all paperwork necessary for the mailing of each issue.

Social Media

  • Create content, text, photos, graphics and possibly video to post on social media and the diocesan website to promote and cover events and distribute local, national and international news.
  • Post content to diocesan social media platforms including but not limited to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and X.
  • Attend, cover, take photos and possibly video at diocesan functions and parish events which includes traveling throughout the diocese.
  • Create online events on YouTube & Facebook to promote events and activities of diocesan ministries. Create graphics to accompany these events.
  • Schedule, promote and produce Facebook Live events and Instagram Live events that are not streamed on YouTube.
  • Monitor and keep up with social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram and X.
  • Monitor diocesan live events and comments.
  • Continue to learn about and adapt to changes in social media and technology.
  • Collaborate with other diocesan departments on promoting and covering their events.
  • Be available to post items outside of regular work hours, including but not limited to breaking news.

Public Relations

  • Serve as backup to director of office who is the main person for media contact. This can include:
  • Field calls from the media.
  • Follow-up with contacts for their inquiries.
  • Create and distribute news releases.
  • Alert the Bishop and senior staff to breaking news and possible problems & concerns in the community.

Website

  • Maintain and update website.
  • Work with diocesan departments and ministries to update information.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This Job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in communication and/or Digital/Online Journalism. Two or more years’ experience with digital communications preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of all sizes.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages. Ability to perform math functions using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFCATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have a current valid Texas Driver’s License and must attend the Safe Environment Training and earn a certificate.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of the Catholic Church. Knowledge and experience with content Management Systems, Social Media Platforms, Photoshop, Word, InDesign Power Point, Excel. Knowledge of new media strategies and online communications. Working knowledge of and experience with online measurement platforms (Google Analytics, You Tube insights, Facebook Insights). Excellent writing and presentation skills. Strong administrative and organizational skills. Strong interpersonal skills.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, typical of an office with computers and printers.

This is a forty-hour per week position. Office hours for this position are from 8:00am until 5:00pm Monday through Friday. Changes to this schedule may be made according to needs for coverage of events. Weekend, evening work, and travel within the Diocese is required.
