General Description
The purpose of this job is to support the delivery of youth and adult recreational programs, special events, and related departmental activities.
Work is performed under close supervision and in accordance with established procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
Core Responsibilities
- Establishes and maintains positive, professional relationships with program participants, parents/guardians, co-workers, program administrators, and facility personnel.
- Represents Dinwiddie County when engaging with parents, guardians, and community members, providing information and feedback in accordance with established protocols.
- Assists in directing, supervising, and organizing participants during activities and throughout programs to support intended goals and outcomes.
- Performs general administrative tasks, including responding to inquiries and complaints, answering telephones, preparing correspondence, and completing routine office duties.
- Identifies and responds to customer service issues in a timely manner and follows up as appropriate to ensure resolution.
- Performs related work as required.
Office Assistant Operations
- Orders and maintains office supplies, manages incoming and outgoing mail, and ensures common areas remain clean and organized.
- Greets visitors and provides general support to the office manager or administrative team.
- Assists with event setup and breakdown within the facility.
- Supports the creation and distribution of flyers, advertisements, and marketing materials for cultural programming.
Athletics and Programs Operations
- Provides logistical and operational support for departmental special events.
- Registers participants using the ActiveNet software system.
- Collects fees, issues receipts, and ensures proper cash-handling practices.
- Monitors facilities during private events, recreational programs, special events, and athletic practices.
- Maintains and documents inventories of equipment and supplies.
- Serves as a resource for outside agencies and the public seeking information about recreation programs and facilities.
- Assists with program and activity setup, facilitation, and cleanup.
- Prepares and maintains attendance records, rosters, and facility/event reports.
- Supports seasonal camps by securing reservations, researching sites, scheduling staff, and assisting with participant supervision.
- Develops and facilitates activities for target populations, including arts and crafts, games, theater, dance, special events, nature programs, history activities, gardening, and similar offerings.
- Inventories, maintains, and cleans program equipment, and supplies at various locations.
- Accurately completes required forms and documentation, including attendance records and incident or facility reports.
Food Service Operations
- Assists the Parks and Recreation Food Services Manager with food preparation in a safe and sanitary kitchen environment.
- Maintains food inventory by verifying and restocking items and supplies.
- Operates the cash register or point-of-sale system, processes cash and credit card transactions, and makes accurate change.
- Monitors stock levels and replenishes food and beverage items at serving stations.
- Keeps the work area clean and organized by wiping counters, washing dishes, and cleaning equipment.
- Assists with end-of-day and closing procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
Experience: None.

Physical Demands
Light Work – Involves lifting no more than 25 pounds at a time, frequent lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
