General Description

The purpose of this job is to respond to emergency calls; provide basic or advanced life support; engage in fire suppression, rescue and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue.

This position works under general supervision of station officers, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Responds to emergency medical service calls, operates apparatus and administers patient care, transports patients to emergency care facilities for definitive care, observes patient responses, maintains accurate and complete prehospital patient care reports.
  • Performs firefighting duties including operating fire apparatus, pumps and related equipment, and performing fire suppression, containment, and salvage and overhaul; lays and connects hoses; secures nozzles and directs streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses various types of extinguishing agents and other firefighting tools.
  • Participates in activities and operations in response to natural disasters, major accidents, incidents involving hazardous materials, and other emergency situations.
  • Participates in emergency rescue operations, including search and rescue, water rescue, elevated rescue, and other rescue operations.
  • Checks and restocks the emergency response vehicles for proper equipment and supplies.
  • Inspects, cleans, tests, and performs general maintenance work on vehicles, apparatus, equipment, station and grounds.
  • Presents programs to the community on safety and Fire/EMS prevention topics.
  • Participates in training and instructional programs of technical material, scheduled drills and classes for various fire and/or EMS topics.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience as Firefighter/ALS provider; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Must possess and maintain all certifications for consideration and duration of employment:
  • Commonwealth of Virginia Office of EMS Intermediate or Paramedic (preferred), State Certified Firefighter I & II, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, EVOC 1-3 certifications, NIMS 100, 200, 700 & 800, CPR.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Special Certifications and Licenses (preferred)

  • Driver Pump Operator
  • Aerial Operations
  • National Registry of Emergency Technicians (NREMT) – Paramedic

Physical Demands

Medium Work – Involves lifting 50 or more pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying objects weighting up to 25 or more pounds.

Work Environment (Unavoidable Hazards)

  • Dangerous work with the possibility of prolonged periods working in high heat, high-stress situations.
  • Involves routine exposure to fire and smoke, and dangerous chemicals and poisonous gases.
  • Involves exposure to biohazards, bloodborne pathogens.
