Summary/Objective of Position:

The duties required to become a dispatcher include recording and maintaining files, records of work services performed, customer requests, and other dispatch information. They are also responsible for overseeing all communications within the specified area, preparing daily work, monitoring the cameras, CAD system, and radio calls, and advising about traffic problems like incidents, construction areas, weather conditions, and other types of hazards. The dispatcher is the lifeline to all patrol officers.

Description of Essential Functions of the Position

  • 40%: Receives and records public requests for service calls to Security Officers using a two-way radio. Reads posted orders to ascertain personnel requirements and notifies officers of work assignments and changes in instructions by telephone.
    • Answers routine questions from the public direct requests for other information to designated personnel.
    • Dispatcher uses Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system; they will be able to understand its features and use the system to log and keep records of all calls for service by assigning an event number. The dispatcher will input crime incidents to the CAD system.
    • To familiarize with Jeanne Clery Act.
  • 30%: Maintains daily log for call for services, messages, facility requests, residence patrol, updated schedules, housing lists.
    • Crime logs will be maintained monthly.
    • Parking permits are issued to students, staff/faculty, and keep track of receipts and applications received.
  • 10%: Maintain a professional uniform appearance by ensuring they have a clean issued uniform, a polished name plate, and boots. Practice good grooming standards and follow all DCPD Standard Operating Policy.
    • Maintain high ethical conduct are above reproach and would not bring Dine College into disrepute.
    • Follow College Policy as written in the Personnel, Policies, and Campus Police Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
    • Perform rotating shift schedules, including holidays as needed.
  • 10%: Public relations: Interacts in a friendly and professional manner with students, staff/faculty, contractors, visitors.
  • 10%: Dispatchers will maintain compliance with CDC guidelines and Diné College protocols.
    • They will assist with Health screening during special events, special meetings, and when contractors are on campus after hours, weekends, and holidays.
    • Be able to multitask by monitoring security cameras and the features of the security surveillance cameras.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

Minimum

  • High School diploma or GED Certificate.

Preferred:

  • AA Degree, and or FLETC telecommunications training, 1st responder course.

Knowledge:

  • The dispatcher should have knowledge of local or regional geographical information relevant to the job.
  • They should be familiar with the telephone communication technique.
  • Dispatchers need to be familiar with basic computer software, since entering, accessing, or retrieving data will be a significant part of the job.
  • They will familiarize themselves with the security camera system.

Skills:

  • Dispatchers need to be able to actively listen to various types of communications messages transmitted.
  • The need to be able to orally express themselves appropriately, and have good judgment and decision-making skills to guide workers and work crews to the correct locations.
  • Being able to manage time correctly can save a dispatcher a lot of trouble guiding coworkers.
  • Information-ordering skills, problem-sensitivity skills, speech clarity, and reading comprehension skills are also helpful skills for a dispatcher to have, as well as excellent communication skills.

Abilities:

  • Dispatcher will have the ability to know Federal, State, and Tribal Criminal and Traffic laws, i.e., Protection orders, warrants, traffic citations, and arrest.
  • Dispatcher will identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • The dispatcher will manage their own time and the time of others.
  • They will have the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

  • Dispatcher have to deal with hectic working conditions when call volumes, have to deal with anxious and afraid callers.
  • Dispatchers have to sit for long periods of time, and have to spend most of their working watching security cameras, which can often lead to back discomfort and eye strain.

Other Requirement(s):

  • Oral fluency in Navajo is highly desirable, but not mandatory.
