Overview

The Sewing Machine Mechanic is an integral part of keeping production lines running. The mechanic will fix machines on the lines on a daily basis and, when all machines on the line are in good repair, troubleshoot broken machines in storage to increase the overall sewing capacity of the factory. The ideal candidate is not only an excellent repairman but is also willing to learn new things, is flexible and able to work in a fast-paced environment, and enjoys supporting the team to be successful and reach production targets.

Key Responsibilities & Expected Outcomes

- Troubleshooting and repair: Diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues with sewing machines, including problems with needle threading, stitch quality, timing, feed dogs, and motor functions.

- Preventative maintenance: Regularly cleaning, lubricating, and inspecting sewing machines to identify potential problems before they occur.

- Parts replacement: Replacing worn or damaged components like needles, bobbins, belts, gears, and motor parts.

- Machine adjustments: Adjusting stitch length, tension, needle position, and other settings based on fabric type and sewing requirements.

- Machine calibration: Ensuring machines are operating within specified parameters and tolerances.

- Reading technical manuals: Interpreting manufacturer instructions for proper maintenance and repair procedures.

- Maintaining records: Keeping detailed logs of repairs, parts used, and customer information.

- Maintenance manuals: Assist in developing maintenance manuals for sewing, knitting, and cutting machines.

- New garment production: Coordinate with Managers on manufacturing methods and processes needed to bring new garments into the product offering.

- Planning production: Provide technical recommendations by compiling, sorting, and analyzing garment production performance records and data; answer questions and respond to operator requests.

- Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

- Mechanical aptitude: Strong understanding of mechanical principles, including gears, belts, motors, and electrical systems.

- Equipment experience: Experience working with Yamato, Serger-Yamato, and Seiko sewing equipment.

- Apparel experience: Experience sewing tubular and/or open-width fabrics, or similar operational management functions in the apparel industry.

- Hand tool proficiency: Ability to use a variety of hand tools like screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, and specialized sewing machine tools.

- Problem-solving skills: Ability to diagnose complex mechanical issues and develop effective repair solutions.

- Attention to detail: Precision is key when adjusting delicate machine parts and ensuring proper stitch quality.

- Technical literacy: Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and diagrams.

- Factory setting: Often working in a manufacturing environment with multiple sewing machines.

Compensation & Schedule

- Pay: $15.00–$20.00 per hour, varies based on experience.

- Job type: Full-time.

- Schedule: 8-hour shift, Monday to Friday.
