What are the responsibilities and job description for the Application Test Engineer position at Diener Precision Pumps?
Company Description
Diener Precision Pumps (DPP) designs and manufactures custom precision gear and metering pumps for OEM customers worldwide. Our engineering and prototyping are based in Lodi, California, while precision manufacturing takes place in Switzerland. We deliver high-performance, chemically inert pumping solutions for the medical, laboratory, diagnostic, printing, and other high-tech fluid markets — combining innovative U.S. engineering with Swiss manufacturing excellence.
Position Summary Diener Precision Pumps is seeking an Electromechanical Engineer to take ownership of our pump testing and electromechanical design. This critical hands-on role focuses on designing, building, and maintaining pump test equipment to validate performance, reliability, and quality. The position also supports customer applications through pump sizing, customization, motor selection, and providing feedback to the customer regarding sensor integration, and electrical system design.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead test equipment development and maintenance: Design, build, improve, and maintain semi-automated pump testers, test stands, and fixtures for performance, endurance, flow/pressure characterization, and quality assurance testing of precision pumps.
- Develop and document test procedures, data acquisition setups, and analysis methods to ensure repeatable, accurate results.
- Select and integrate motors (DC, BLDC, Stepper, etc.), controllers, sensors (flow, pressure, temperature, etc.), and electrical components for both internal test systems and customer pump applications.
- Support customer applications by tailoring DPP pumps and drive systems to specific requirements, including motor/controller optimization, sensor integration, and system-level troubleshooting.
- Troubleshoot pump, motor, and control system issues in the lab and production sites.
- Occasional travel for production & customer support including international travel.
Requirements Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 2–5 years of experience designing/building/maintaining test equipment or test stands.
- Strong hands-on skills with mechanical fixturing, data acquisition systems, and automation.
- Basic Windows programming experience (C#, Labview, or similar) to support test system operation and reporting.
- Ability to program (C/C , Arduino, or similar) and integrate off-the-shelf microcontroller development boards with other hardware to create standalone test systems.
- Experience with DC/BLDC/Stepper motors, controllers, sensors, and electrical component selection.
- Proficiency with CAD (SolidWorks preferred) for designing test fixtures, test fixture assemblies, and customer pump proposals.
- Ability and availability for international travel (roughly 2 weeks per year).
- Good communication and customer presentation skills.
Preferred
- Direct experience with precision gear pumps, metering pumps, or fluid dynamics testing.
- Experience designing custom circuit boards.
- Experience soldering
- Familiarity with endurance/reliability testing and compliance standards.
- Prior customer application or technical support experience.
