Position: Carpenter                            

 

Department: Facility Services

 

Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt

 

Immediate Supervisor(s): Director of Maintenance     

 

Pay Grade: Per Compensation Manual  

 

Days Employed: Per Compensation Manual    

 

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Perform skilled work in the construction, alteration, repair, and installation of fixtures, buildings, and structures
  • Maintain district facilities in attractive and safe condition

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certification:

  •  Clear and valid Texas driver’s license

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

 

  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in carpentry
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instruction
  • Ability to read blueprints and diagrams
  • Ability to measure and perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to work independently to complete work orders and projects

 

Experience:

 

  • Minimum of 3 years experience as a skilled carpenter

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Access and complete needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment by following established inspection and maintenance procedures
  • Plan and complete construction of cabinets, shelves, and partitions from initial layout to assembly following oral instruction, plans, specifications, blueprints, and work orders
  • Select material and hardware & calculate time and material estimates
  • Receive and complete work orders
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed during and after normal working hours
  • Maintain accurate records on material and labor used
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean and excess materials are removed
  • Remove, install, and repair various types of commercial flooring, including carpet, VCT, ceramic tile, etc.
  • Remove, install, and repair various types of commercial ceilings
  • Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials

 

Safety:

  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor
  • Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard carpentry equipment including small hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments; ladders, lifts, light truck or van
  • Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving 
  • Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis
  • Environment: Work outside and inside on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and material, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards.  Work around machinery with moving parts, may work alone, work irregular hours, occasional prolonged hours, frequent district-wide travel
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress 
  • Professional Dress: Uniform shirt provided
