What are the responsibilities and job description for the CDL-A Driver / Skilled Tradesperson – Carpentry or Welding position at Dickinson Homes Inc.?
Dickinson Homes is looking for a dependable Class A CDL driver who is also comfortable working with their hands.
This is not a traditional over-the-road driving position. Our drivers help transport modular homes, building materials, equipment, and related loads to projects throughout Michigan and Wisconsin. Between deliveries, this employee will work with our factory and shop teams performing carpentry, framing, welding, fabrication, equipment work, material handling, or other tasks that match their experience.
The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys driving but does not want to sit in a truck every day. We are looking for a versatile, mechanically inclined person who wants steady full-time employment, variety in their work, and the satisfaction of helping build and deliver complete custom homes.
What You Will Do
- Safely operate company tractors and trailers
- Transport modular home sections, materials, and equipment
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections
- Properly secure and inspect loads
- Maintain required driving logs and documentation
- Assist with delivery-day positioning and coordination
- Work in our factory or shop between scheduled deliveries
- Perform carpentry, framing, repairs, welding, fabrication, equipment maintenance, or material handling based on experience
- Keep trucks, trailers, tools, and work areas clean and organized
- Follow all DOT and company safety requirements
What We Are Looking For
- Valid Class A CDL
- Current DOT medical card
- Acceptable motor vehicle record
- Ability to pass required drug and alcohol testing
- Commercial driving experience preferred
- Experience with load securement, oversized loads, construction equipment, or specialized trailers is a plus
- Carpentry, framing, welding, fabrication, mechanical, construction, or shop experience strongly preferred
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and safely climb on and around trucks, trailers, and loads
- Willingness to work outdoors and assist wherever needed
- Dependable attendance and a strong work ethic
- Ability to accommodate early starts, variable delivery schedules, overtime, and overnight travel
We are willing to train the right CDL driver on portions of the construction and shop work. Applicants with strong carpentry, welding, fabrication, mechanical, or equipment experience will receive priority consideration.
