Job Overview
Diamond C Plumbing & Utilities is hiring a Repair Laborer / Top Hand to support underground utility repair and installation crews. This position is a skilled field role responsible for assisting with water, sewer, and storm drain repairs, supporting excavation activities, spotting equipment, working in and around trenches, handling materials and tools, and helping the crew complete work safely and efficiently.
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, and experienced in underground utility or heavy civil construction. This person should be comfortable performing physical labor, assisting with live utility repairs, supporting operators and foremen, and helping maintain production in the field.
Responsibilities
- Assist with underground utility repairs and installations
- Help repair water lines, sewer lines, storm drain systems, service lines, valves, hydrants, and related utility components
- Work in and around trenches while following all trench safety requirements
- Spot equipment and guide operators safely during excavation, pipe placement, backfill, and compaction
- Assist with exposing existing utilities by hand digging and careful excavation support
- Support tie-ins, cut-ins, pipe replacements, clamps, couplings, fittings, and service connections
- Handle pipe, fittings, valves, tools, pumps, shoring materials, and jobsite equipment
- Assist with trench boxes, shoring, dewatering, backfill, compaction, and restoration
- Load, unload, and stage materials, tools, and equipment for the crew
- Use hand tools, cutoff saws, compactors, jumping jacks, plate tampers, pumps, and other small equipment safely and effectively
- Assist with locating problem areas, exposing damaged pipe, and preparing repair areas for utility crews
- Maintain clean and organized work areas, trucks, and jobsite staging
- Follow foreman direction and work with the crew to keep jobs moving safely and productively
- Perform general labor and skilled support tasks as needed
Qualifications
- 1 year of construction, utility, pipe, or underground repair experience preferred
- Experience working around trenches, excavations, and underground utilities preferred
- Ability to assist with water, sewer, and storm repair work
- Ability to safely use hand tools and small equipment
- Understanding of safe work practices around heavy equipment and active jobsites
- Ability to spot equipment and communicate clearly with operators and crew leaders
- Ability to work in mud, water, tight spaces, and changing field conditions
- Strong attendance, reliability, and willingness to learn
- Ability to follow direction and work well with a crew
- Valid driver’s license required
- CDL is a plus
- OSHA training is a plus
Preferred Field Skills
- Hand digging and utility exposure
- Assisting with water main, sewer main, and storm drain repairs
- Valve box, meter box, hydrant, and service line repair support
- Cutting and removing damaged pipe
- Assisting with clamps, couplings, fittings, and repair sleeves
- Backfilling and compacting repair trenches
- Working around live utilities and emergency repair conditions
- Setting trench boxes and helping maintain safe trench access
- Using pumps for water control and basic dewatering
- Supporting traffic control and safe work zone setup
- Loading and unloading pipe, fittings, and repair materials
- Jobsite cleanup and restoration support
- Working efficiently in residential, roadway, and municipal utility environments
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift throughout the day
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to work safely around heavy equipment and open excavations
