POSITION SUMMARY:

The Behavioral Health Intake Coordinator is responsible for providing high quality patient care and displaying excellent assessment skills in the areas of mental health and chemical dependency. The Intake Coordinator will have experience in Crisis Intervention, triage of patients in crisis, acting as liaison to physicians requiring information to make clinical decisions. The Intake Coordinator will demonstrate skill in determining and documenting medical necessity for admission; have an understanding of TJC and CMS guidelines as they relate to access to care in a mental health facility. The Intake Coordinator is expected to function well as a member of the interdisciplinary team and participate in community relation activities, performance improvement activities and hospital sponsored events.

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • Related experience can be substituted for degree for a candidate currently enrolled in an acceptable Master’s Degree program.
  • Current BLS Certification
  • CPI training within 30 days of hire date
  • Must be able to be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues
  • Good written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to read, write and speak English (Spanish helpful)

  • JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

  • The intake coordinator will demonstrate skill in determining and documenting medical necessity for admission; have an understanding of TJC and CMS guidelines as they relate to access to care in a mental health facility.
  • The Intake Coordinator is expected to function well as a member of the interdisciplinary team and participate in community relation activities, performance improvement activities and hospital sponsored events.
  • One year clinical experience in a position primarily responsible for assessment, crisis intervention and disposition of mental health patients in crisis.
  • Experience working in a hospital setting or emergency room and acting as a liaison between physicians a plus

  • Ability to represent the program well in interactions both inside and outside the hospital
  • Coordinates services within the department(s) and with other departments
  • Must be flexible with work scheduling

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

Employees must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirement relative to his or her age.

B. Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.

C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
