Overview

We seek an experienced, energetic, entrepreneurial, and highly hands-on Managing Director to serve as the Center’s senior professional manager. This role is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and operation of the Center, including staff leadership, finances, retreat experience, facilities, programming logistics, community engagement, and the implementation of strategic priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations and Retreatant Experience

  • Maintain an exceptionally welcoming, peaceful, attentive, and well-run environment for retreatants, teachers, volunteers, donors, and other visitors.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Center, including guest services, facilities, program logistics, scheduling, vendors, and other operational systems.
  • Establish and continually improve procedures and standards that support efficient, consistent, high-quality operations.
  • Drive the execution of the Center’s strategic priorities, translating established long-term vision into coordinated plans, initiatives, and measurable outcomes.
  • Respond effectively and personally when unexpected operational challenges arise.
  • Take primary responsibility for implementing Board-approved initiatives.

Staff and Volunteer Leadership

  • Lead, supervise, support, and develop the Center’s staff.
  • Establish clear responsibilities, goals, expectations, and systems of accountability.
  • Recruit and retain capable staff as needed within the approved budget.
  • Strengthen and expand the Center’s volunteer community and create meaningful opportunities for volunteer participation.

Financial Management and Sustainability

  • Manage day-today finances.
  • Prepare a proposed annual operating budget for Board approval and manage the Center within the approved budget.
  • Monitor financial performance and review results regularly with the Board and Finance Committee.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen revenue, improve efficiency, manage costs, and increase the Center’s long-term sustainability.

Outreach and Community

  • Strengthen Dharmakaya’s relationships with teachers, retreat leaders, donors, volunteers, participants, and the larger community.
  • Represent the Center professionally to visitors, community organizations, service providers, regulatory bodies, donors, and the public.

Governance and Compliance

  • Maintain a productive, transparent, and collaborative relationship with the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure appropriate compliance with laws and regulations applicable to the Center as an employer, nonprofit organization, and residential retreat facility.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of confidentiality, privacy, risk management, and organizational integrity.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five or more years senior management experience that includes P&L accountability.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff and complex day-to-day operations.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, financial analysis, reporting, and accountability for financial results.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve operational problems and lead effectively in changing circumstances.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work successfully with and motivate staff, Board members, volunteers, teachers, retreatants, donors, and outside partners.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and project-management skills.
  • Sound judgment, integrity, resilience, self-direction, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • An entrepreneurial and improvement-oriented mindset combined with disciplined execution.
  • Significant experience creating a customer environment to specific standards and managing customer satisfaction.
  • Appreciation of diverse spiritual and cultural traditions and respect for each person’s spiritual journey.

Experience in one or more of the following areas a plus:

  • Meditation, yoga, contemplative, wellness, or spiritually oriented organizations
  • Hospitality, retreat centers, conference centers, or residential programs
  • Nonprofit management
  • A bachelor’s or advanced degree is preferred, or significant relevant leadership and management experience.

Pay: $100,000.00 per year
