Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Capacity Planning Engineer – Mainframe to join our team. This role is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and forecasting mainframe system capacity and performance. The ideal candidate will leverage data science methodologies, statistical analysis, and deep mainframe expertise to provide insights that support capacity planning, system optimization, and business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Capacity Planning & Reporting
- Produce monthly capacity reports, including:
- Resource utilization across LPARs
- Usage trends, peak profiles, and threshold exceptions
- Top-N consumption analysis
- Prepare and present materials for monthly capacity review meetings
- Develop annual capacity planning reports
- Generate quarterly reporting for governance and leadership stakeholders
Data Collection & Analysis
- Collect and integrate system performance data (SMF, RMF, etc.) with business volume data
- Perform:
- Correlation analysis (business volume vs. system resources)
- Pattern recognition and anomaly detection
- Statistical modeling (regression, forecasting, time-series analysis including ARIMA)
- Analyze application-level resource usage by system/application ID
Forecasting & Risk Assessment
- Develop and maintain capacity forecasts
- Conduct forecast vs. actual analysis
- Perform risk assessments based on changing business and market conditions
- Collaborate on stress testing and scenario analysis
Operational Support
- Ensure successful daily processing and reporting of mainframe performance data across multiple environments
- Support processing streams segmented by LPAR and workload type
- Calculate and validate CPU, storage, and system utilization metrics
- Deliver usage data for financial chargeback/reporting processes
Tools, Systems & Maintenance
- Work with mainframe performance and capacity tools (e.g., MICS/MXG)
- Maintain and enhance data collection systems to support new hardware, OS updates, and platform changes
- Support data pipelines across both mainframe and distributed environments
Documentation & Governance
- Create and maintain:
- Business process requirements documentation
- Model validation documentation and test results
- Policies and procedures supporting audit and regulatory requirements
- Partner with governance, audit, and validation teams as needed
Required Qualifications
- 8 years of experience in mainframe capacity planning, performance engineering, or related field
- Strong proficiency with SAS or similar statistical analysis tools
- Solid foundation in descriptive and inferential statistics
- Experience with:
- Mainframe technologies (LPARs, JCL, scheduling tools)
- Performance data sources (SMF, RMF, CICS, DB2, MQ)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work with large datasets
- High attention to detail and data accuracy
