The Marine Forklift Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of marina forklifts and related equipment to support vessel launching, hauling, storage, transport, and marina operations at Dewey Beach Yacht Club. This position plays a critical role in ensuring exceptional customer service while maintaining the highest standards of safety, equipment care, and operational efficiency.

The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Marine Forklift Operations

  • Safely operate marine forklifts, travel lifts, and related equipment to launch, haul, move, and store vessels.
  • Conduct pre-operation inspections and complete daily equipment safety checklists.
  • Transport vessels to designated storage locations while maintaining safe operating procedures.
  • Properly secure vessels using blocks, stands, and storage equipment.
  • Assist with boat launching and retrieval operations during peak periods.
  • Monitor weather and environmental conditions to ensure safe operating practices.

Marina Operations Support

  • Assist customers with vessel movements, launching, and storage requests.
  • Coordinate vessel movements with marina management and dock staff.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of dry storage yards and operational areas.
  • Assist with dock maintenance, marina projects, and general property upkeep as assigned.
  • Support fuel dock and marina operations during busy periods when needed.
  • Participate in property preparation, storm preparation, and cleanup activities.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all OSHA regulations, marina safety procedures, and company operating policies.
  • Report equipment issues, maintenance needs, safety concerns, and incidents immediately.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Participate in required safety meetings, training programs, and certifications.
  • Properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous forklift, heavy equipment, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, or marine equipment operating experience preferred.
  • Marine forklift or travel lift experience strongly preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to safely operate heavy equipment.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with customers and team members.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and work around boats and equipment.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and operate equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and cold temperatures.
  • Ability to safely access marina docks, vessels, and storage areas.

Schedule

  • Availability to work weekdays, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required during peak boating periods.
  • Schedule may vary based on weather conditions, customer demand, and marina operational needs.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience operating marina forklifts ranging from 15,000 to 35,000 pounds capacity.
  • Knowledge of vessel handling, blocking, and storage procedures.
  • Experience working in marina, boating, construction, agricultural, or heavy equipment environments.
  • Basic maintenance and equipment troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong customer service abilities and professional demeanor.
