Whether you have a few hours each month or several hours each week, your time can provide comfort, companionship, dignity, and hope during one of life's most meaningful journeys.

As a CHAP Accredited Hospice and CHAP Certified Age-Friendly Care at Home Provider, we are committed to providing exceptional patient-centered care while creating meaningful volunteer opportunities within the communities we serve.

Serving Oakland, Livingston, Wayne, and surrounding counties.

What You'll Do

Volunteer opportunities are available based on your interests, availability, and comfort level.

Patient Companion

  • Visit patients wherever they call home
  • Provide companionship and conversation
  • Read books or devotional materials
  • Listen to music or watch television together
  • Play cards, games, or complete puzzles
  • Assist with legacy or memory projects
  • Spend time outdoors when appropriate
  • Provide caregiver respite by remaining with a patient while a caregiver takes a short break
  • Offer a comforting presence

Connection Calls

  • Weekly tuck-in calls
  • Friendly check-in calls
  • Caregiver support calls
  • Bereavement follow-up calls (after training)

Bereavement Support

  • Memorial events
  • Sympathy mailings
  • Bereavement projects
  • Family support activities

Administrative Support

  • Prepare admission packets
  • Filing and office organization
  • Data entry
  • Mailings
  • Special office projects

Community Outreach

Help us educate and support our community by volunteering at:

  • Health fairs
  • Senior expos
  • Community events
  • Educational presentations
  • Volunteer recruitment events
  • Community awareness activities

Share Your Talents

  • Haircuts and barber services
  • Hairstyling
  • Manicures
  • Licensed foot care
  • Music or singing
  • Art or crafts
  • Photography
  • Pet therapy

  • Sewing, quilting, knitting, or crocheting

Professionals providing services that require state licensure or certification must possess and maintain the appropriate current license or credential and practice within their professional scope.

Qualifications

We're looking for individuals who are:

  • Able to maintain confidentiality (HIPAA)
  • Professional and reliable

No healthcare experience is required.

Comprehensive orientation, training, and ongoing education are provided before volunteer assignments begin.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Complete volunteer orientation and onboarding
  • Follow Devotion Hospice policies and procedures
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Maintain professional boundaries
  • Document volunteer activities as required
  • Communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Represent Devotion Hospice professionally

Volunteers do not provide skilled nursing services, administer medications, perform personal care, or replace the work of paid hospice staff.

Compensation

This is an unpaid volunteer position.

While volunteers do not receive financial compensation, they receive the opportunity to provide comfort, companionship, dignity, and hope to individuals and families during one of life's most meaningful journeys.
