Registered Nurse Specialist– DWIHN Outpatient Clinic (Full-time)

Position Summary
 The Registered Nurse provides comprehensive, integrated behavioral and physical health services to individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders. Under the supervision of the Medical Director for Outpatient Clinic, the RN delivers psychiatric nursing care in a culturally diverse community mental health setting. Responsibilities include assessment, treatment planning, medication administration, crisis intervention, care coordination, and management of the clinic’s Infection Control and Communicable Disease Program per accreditation guidelines.

Required Qualifications
 • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited school
 • Current, unrestricted Michigan RN license
 • CPR/BLS and ACLS certification
 • Valid Michigan Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and current auto insurance
 • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and manage multiple priorities
 • Strong communication, professionalism, and customer‑service skills
 • Ability to take initiative and support department goals

Preferred Qualifications
 • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
 • Minimum 1 year of clinical experience in Behavioral Health, Community Mental Health, Psychiatry, Crisis Services, Substance Use Treatment, Partial Hospitalization, Residential Programs, or similar settings
 • Experience with MAPS, PMP AWARxE, or PDMP
 • PMH-RN certification
 • Phone triage experience and knowledge of psychotropic medications

Experience
 • 1–2 years of nursing experience (behavioral health, psychiatry, or outpatient preferred)
 • Experience serving individuals with mental illness, substance use disorders, or co‑occurring conditions
 • Familiarity with crisis intervention, de-escalation, and trauma-informed care

Job Responsibilities
 • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team on assessments, care planning, implementation, and evaluation
 • Complete nursing assessments and clinical histories; refer to medical providers as appropriate
 • Provide education on health conditions, treatments, medications, nutrition, and wellness strategies
 • Monitor labs and diagnostic results; report abnormalities to prescribing providers or PCPs
 • Administer medications, including injections and long‑acting injectables
 • Monitor vital signs and key health indicators
 • Provide crisis intervention for mental health and substance use emergencies
 • Conduct on-site and community-based visits as needed
 • Facilitate healthy living and medical risk‑reduction groups
 • Maintain documentation in compliance with Medicaid, DWIHN, and accreditation requirements
 • Oversee Infection Control and Communicable Disease Program compliance
 • Maintain nursing accreditation standards for the clinic
 • Advocate for clients and coordinate referrals with internal and external agencies
 • Provide one‑to‑one health education and presentations to members
 • Coordinate care for clients with high acuity or in Treat‑to‑Target stages
 • Perform additional duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 • Knowledge of the Michigan Mental Health Code and MDHHS requirements
 • Proficiency in clinical skills such as vitals collection, injections, and point‑of‑care testing
 • Skilled in medical and behavioral health crisis management
 • Understanding of medical terminology relevant to mental health
 • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations
 • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic health records
 • Strong problem-solving, time‑management, and conflict‑resolution skills
 • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
 • Strong teamwork and independent work capability
 • Knowledge of community mental health systems and public health concepts
 • Ability to provide culturally competent education to individuals and groups
 • Strong meeting facilitation and active listening skills
 • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
 • Effective written and verbal communication
 • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is usually performed in an office setting but requires the employee to drive to different sites throughout Wayne County and the State of Michigan. This position can work remotely with supervisory approval.
