Under the general supervision of the Crisis Services - Site Director, the Charge Nurse assumes shift responsibilities for the care delivery team.  This position also serves  the role of a staff nurse.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides clinical supervision and guidance to unit staff.
  • Functions as the lead and information resource for nursing personnel. 
  • Assists in evaluating client care provided by nursing staff. 
  • Assists in coordinating the provision of care through staff assignments and scheduling.
  • Assists in the prioritization, delegation and evaluation of crisis care services. 
  • Assists with staff educational requirements and process improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to continuously improve the  productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness of crisis care services.
  • Works closely with the Site Director to coordinate and improve clinical care by problem-solving both system and unit-based issues. 
  • Works in a variety of capacities during staff shortages and/or emergent situations.
  • Maintains an on-call status to support departmental needs.
  • Supervises scheduling and arranges coverage for absences to assure appropriate nurse-client ratios.
  • Coordinates with outside medical and nursing support services including, but not limited to, pharmacy and laboratory services.
  • Provides ongoing audits of services provided by nursing staff.
  • Assists to improve productivity, efficiency, recovery outcomes and medical care for crisis care clients.
  • Assists with departmental process improvement and peer review.
  • Coordinates and delivers educational development opportunities to aide staff to maintain and enhance care competencies.
  • Completes clinical documentation as required.
  • Assures  that nursing care remains in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Assists with hiring, onboarding and training of crisis care nursing staff.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of psychiatric nursing.  
  • Knowledge of Crisis Operations principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of Crisis Center operations and management.
  • Knowledge of Crisis Center programs.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric medications and their indications, common side effects, reactions and interactions of medications prescribed. 
  • Knowledge and ability to work with agitated patients in crisis and their families to implement behavioral management interventions.
  • Knowledge of the clinical care process (screening, assessment, treatment planning, case management and continuing care).
  • Knowledge of and ability to use screening and assessment tools for behavioral health services.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health case management practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of medical and behavioral health practices and terminology.
  • Knowledge of Federal policies, rules, regulations and procedures as it relates to DWIHN.
  • Knowledge of clinical assessment principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of clinical licensure in the State of Michigan.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. 

Associate degree required, BSN preferred.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of full-time paid experience as an RN.

 

REQUIRED LICENSE(S):

A Valid State of Michigan clinical licensure:  RN 

American Heart Association (AHA) BLS required, ACLS preferred.

A valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with a safe and acceptable driving record.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

A Nursing Competency Checklist must be completed as part of the new hire onboarding process.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position will work in the DWIHN Crisis Care Center.  This position will be required to work with persons who may suffer from mental health or substance abuse crises.

Crisis Care Operations is a 24/7 unit.   Candidates will be required to work a 12-hour schedule.  Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule.
