Position Summary: The Teacher offers a rigorous curriculum aligned with the State of Michigan Common Core guidelines and Wayne RESA Strong Beginnings program expectations while upholding the mission, vision, and values of the Detroit Public Schools Community District. Collaborates with families and other staff members to ensure academic success of students. Evaluates and monitors students¿ progress periodically.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Michigan Teacher Certificate or Michigan Temporary Teaching Authorization (T2EA) with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education ZA, ZS, or PK-3 Elementary Education ZO.
  • Bachelor¿s degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or equivalent agencies.
  • Must possess at least 2 semester hours or 3.0 CEU¿s in Child Care Administration or have an administrative credential approved by the State of Michigan or be willing to obtain credentials within 6 months of hire.

Essential Functions

  • Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students ages 2.9 to 3 years old, utilizing the mandated curriculum (Creative Curriculum for Preschool).
  • Create a classroom environment that is conductive to learning and appropriate to the preschool assignment.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation (lesson plans) in Smart Teach upon request of the immediate supervisor.
  • Follow and adhere to the procedures and guidelines of the Early Childhood Department, State of Michigan Childcare Licensing (LARA), Wayne County RESA, Strong Beginnings, MiLeap and DPSCD.
  • Implement understandings of child development for 2- and 3-year-olds to facilitate a classroom environment that supports developmentally appropriate child behavior, using knowledge of the district's core curriculum (Creative Curriculum), Strong Beginnings Implementation Manual, and Child Care Licensing (LARA).
  • Lead efforts for a comprehensive home-school approach to student toileting training and support. Understand the nuances of toileting and self-care support needs for the 2-3-year-old. Manage toileting responsibilities and support for students, including Following Child Care Licensing diapering procedures.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals - establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Collect and record anecdotal notes on students daily. Enter data into Teaching Strategies GOLD.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis through Teaching Strategies GOLD and provide progress reports as required/ requested. Complete other assessments as required by Wayne RESA and the Early Childhood department (e.g., ASQ)
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and workstations.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Complete Home Visits twice per school year. Complete Parent-Teacher Conference at least twice per school year and maintain an Individual Development Plan for each student throughout the school year.
  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for Associate Teacher, Noon Hour Aide and/or volunteer(s) and provide feedback to immediate supervisor as it relates to their job performance if requested.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence (classwork, participation in professional growth activities). Work to implement through instruction and district's philosophy of education and its goals and objectives.
  • Obtain 24 hours of Professional Development per school year including but not limited to: CPR/First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogen, Food Safety, Diversity and Licensing regulations as appropriate.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
