Location: Various Locations

Salary: $91,728 - $93,808 $15,000 *Wage Enhancement

Reports to: Building Principal

Bargaining Unit: N/A

Telecommuting Eligibility: School-based. Not eligible for telecommuting

  • Must hold an active ESE endorsement and receive Full or temporary approval for Supervisor of Special Education under Michigan Department of Education.

Position Summary

The Assistant Principal (AP) provides day-to-day operational support for the assigned school and related Exceptional Student Education (ESE) personnel to help ensure the achievement/success of school and ESE specific goals and objectives. The AP oversees and directs aspects of a Free and Appropriate Public Education focused on the daily operation of specially designed instruction as required under IDEA and MARSE. ESE administration focuses on the supervision and management of special education programs, including inclusion and accommodations within the general education school building to provide educational services, instruction, communication, budget, and personnel guidance. The Special Education building-level administrator will be responsible for acting as a liaison between special education staff in the building, constituents and the ESE Central Office department. This role is key in supporting the principal with defining and enforcing school policies and guidelines for students, staff, and parents. As such, the AP is an integral member of the school’s leadership team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of education or related field of special education.
  • Full approval or temporary approval (If qualified), for Supervisor of Special Education under Michigan Department of Education requirements
  • Valid State of Michigan Teacher Certificate in Secondary or Elementary Education with a minimum of one special education endorsement area.
  • Valid State of Michiagn School Administrator Certificate
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful certified teaching experience, with a minimum of three (3) years in special education, and an annual performance rating of effective (E), or highly effective (HE)
  • Knowledge and understanding of Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education and how it relates to the development, implementation and monitoring of ESE programs, services, procedures and processes
  • Proven experience serving in a leadership capacity (i.e., assistant principal, dean, school improvement chair, District-Level Teacher Consultant, ESE lead teacher)
  • Exemplary presentation, organizational, and communication skills (speaking, listening, and writing)
  • Strong technology skills, including competence in the use of technology to prepare and complete reports and communications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current educational research and ability to translate into classroom and school practice
  • Evidence of skills analyzing and interpreting student achievement data and utilizing that data to increase student achievement
  • Exemplary attendance

Essential Functions

  • Oversees the scheduling of all special education required meetings and IEP services to ensure compliance with state and federal rules, as well as the assignment of staff caseloads.
  • Serves as the assigned Designee or District Representative for all IEP meetings. Provide feedback to case managers prior to and following IEP meetings, coordinates with ESE Central Office on cases with advocates or legal advisors.
  • Plans, supports, and provides appropriate professional development opportunities for all building level staff on the provision of FAPE and specially designed instruction.
  • Plays an active and visible role at school-based events after hours and on weekends, as required by the Principal/School or District.
  • Acts as Summer School Director for the building, as needed (optional).
  • Promotes communication and collaboration between all stakeholders as well as Early On/Preschool (sending) or high schools (receiving).
  • Ensures an inclusive climate and culture at the building level with access to the least restrictive environment for students with exceptionalities.
  • Ensures Medicaid billing is entered by all special education staff.
  • Lead assessment/accommodation coordinator for WIDA & MI-Access assessments in the building.
  • Ensures appropriate evaluations and progress monitoring are regularly collected for students with exceptionalities.
  • Accesses AESOP/AMS as the responsible party for requesting ESE substitutes (i.e., day-to-day, long term, etc.).
  • Responsible for supervising and managing building coverage i.e., staff absence, class coverage, and security coverage as directed.
  • Recruits and interviews candidates for ESE vacancies within the building, as requested by the Principal.
  • Plays and active role in and supports the Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) Culture and Climate Leadership Team (CLT) and the Engagement Leadership Team (ELT) with an emphasis on ESE Parent Engagement (i.e., enrollment, and parent experience).
  • Ensures compliance with the MDE Pupil Accounting process at the building-level in coordination with Central Office ESE Information Management Systems Department.
  • Ensures compliance with the School-Based Evaluation Team (SBET) process.
  • Attends and participates in all ESE professional developments assigned by the District & school.
  • Supports principal with the appropriate disciplinary procedures for Exceptional Student Education (i.e., staff and students).
  • Supports principal with ESE personnel issues.
  • Supervises and manages all subsidy government-required documents.
  • Manages building-level ESE compliance inclusive of quarterly provision of student progress reports and report cards to parents and the timely completion of all District surveys.
  • Responsible for supervising and managing ESE student transportation procedures (i.e., assigning bus captains, bus routes, student safety, collaboration with the transportation department).
  • Supervises school personnel for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing professional growth, and achieving overall objectives of the school’s curriculum.
  • Models, identifies, discusses, and provides feedback on effective pedagogical strategies.
  • Supervises instruction, including monitoring of lesson plans, and provides actionable feedback.
  • Establishes Professional Learning Communities.
  • Develops programs aligned with the School Improvement Plan and the District Academic Plan.
  • Interprets, reviews, and monitors data systems relative to student assessments.
  • Accesses the student information system for the purpose of building the master schedule, in addition to creating, monitoring, and reviewing schedules, reports, and student data.
  • Communicates relevant policies and procedures about student discipline, conduct, and attendance to students, staff, and parents.
  • Contacts and communicates directly with parents/guardians regularly to ensure parent awareness of, and involvement in, their child’s school performance.
  • Conducts teacher observations and assists with the performance evaluation process.
  • Works and collaborates effectively with teachers and other school-based personnel to develop and implement individual student support plans.
  • Assists with the management of the school’s operational processes (i.e., budgeting, facility.)
  • Maintains accurate data, records, etc., to document all activities conducted and services provided.
  • Performs other duties ass assigned by the principal or designee.
