Salary: $81,929 - $111,190

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Male Mentoring Initiatives provides multi-faceted strategic leadership and direct program oversight for DPSCD's district-wide male mentoring ecosystem. Reporting to the Chief of External Engagement, this role operates across multiple domains simultaneously: overseeing contract partners delivering school-based mentoring programming; facilitating and growing a district Male Mentoring Advisory Group; delivering the district's Manhood Curriculum through regular trainings; recruiting and developing male mentors trained to work directly with students; expanding partnerships with community, service, and Greek-letter organizations; and driving rigorous program monitoring, reporting, and evaluation. The Assistant Director is accountable for ensuring that every young man in DPSCD has access to high-quality, culturally affirming mentoring support from elementary through high school.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work, Public Administration, Counseling, or a closely related field required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in mentoring, youth development, student support services, or a related field; experience managing multiple program sites or contract partners strongly preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of supervisory or program management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing programs for young men of color in urban school or community settings.
  • Strong knowledge of culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and restorative practices.
  • Proven ability to build community partnerships and manage external stakeholder relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, facilitation, and public speaking skills.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and program evaluation; experience producing program monitoring reports and leading formal evaluations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and facilitate curriculum or structured training programs for adult learners and/or youth in urban settings.
  • Experience facilitating advisory boards, coalitions, or community working groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Established relationships with sororities, fraternities, civic service organizations, or faith communities engaged in youth mentoring or male development work.
  • Experience working within a large urban school district.
  • Familiarity with Detroit's community landscape, assets, and resources.
  • Experience with grant writing, budget management, and federal/state program compliance.
  • Knowledge of college access, career readiness, or re-engagement programming.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish or English/Arabic) is a plus.

Essential Functions

  • Provide direct oversight and management of multiple contract partners delivering mentoring programming within designated DPSCD schools, ensuring fidelity to program models, compliance with contract terms, and alignment with district goals.
  • Conduct regular site visits to contract partner schools to observe programming, provide technical assistance, and ensure quality service delivery for male students.
  • Facilitate and continuously grow the district's Male Mentoring Advisory Group, convening community leaders, educators, faith partners, and organizational allies to guide strategy and programming decisions.
  • Plan, facilitate, and evaluate regular male mentoring trainings grounded in DPSCD's Manhood Curriculum, ensuring consistent and culturally affirming delivery across all program sites.
  • Actively recruit, screen, and develop male mentors who are trained in the Manhood Curriculum and equipped to deliver programming directly to DPSCD students with cultural competence and relational depth.
  • Build a cadre of trained mentor-trainers capable of delivering the Manhood Curriculum independently, creating a sustainable pipeline of facilitators across the district.
  • Proactively expand partnerships with mentoring organizations, civic groups, service organizations, Greek-letter fraternities and sororities, faith institutions, and businesses to bolster community involvement and widen the district's mentoring capacity.
  • Design and oversee district-level mentoring programming including one-on-one, group, and peer models; coordinate summer institutes, retreats, field experiences, and special events for male student participants.
  • Facilitate comprehensive program monitoring across all contract partners and school sites, establishing clear performance benchmarks and conducting regular progress reviews.
  • Develop and submit regular program reports to district leadership, funders, and the Male Mentoring Advisory Group, documenting participation data, student outcomes, and program progress against stated goals.
  • Design and implement program evaluation frameworks to assess the effectiveness and equity of mentoring interventions; use findings to drive continuous quality improvement across all program components.
  • Collaborate with school principals, counselors, and instructional staff to coordinate mentoring supports with academic intervention and student support strategies.
  • Supervise, coach, and evaluate program staff, school-based mentoring coordinators, and AmeriCorps/intern personnel.
  • Manage program budgets, grant deliverables, and compliance reporting; support grant writing initiatives to sustain and grow program funding.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
