Role Description The ASD Special Education Teacher is a full-time, on-site role based in Detroit, MI. This role is responsible for planning and delivering individualized instruction for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), aligned with IEP goals and state standards. Daily responsibilities include developing and implementing evidence-based instructional strategies, adapting curriculum and materials, and using data to monitor progress and adjust teaching. The teacher collaborates with related service providers, general education staff, and families to support student learning, behavior, and social-emotional development. Additional duties include maintaining accurate documentation, participating in IEP meetings, managing a safe and inclusive classroom environment, and engaging in professional development offered by the District.
Qualifications
- Possession of valid Michigan teaching certification with appropriate Special Education endorsement (ASD or equivalent) or eligibility to obtain required credentials.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ASD-specific instructional strategies, behavioral supports, and inclusive practices, including experience with differentiated instruction and individualized interventions.
- Ability to develop, implement, and monitor IEPs, conduct ongoing assessment, analyze student data, and communicate progress to families and school teams.
- Strong classroom management, organization, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, families, colleagues, and support staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Proficiency in written and verbal communication, documentation, and use of educational technology and digital tools to support instruction and record-keeping.
- Commitment to DPSCD’s whole child approach, including supporting students’ social-emotional needs, independence, and self-advocacy in school and community settings.
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field required; master’s degree in Special Education or a related discipline is preferred.
- Experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a school or clinical setting is strongly preferred.
