What are the responsibilities and job description for the Product Design Engineer position at Design Observer?
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: Sugar Land, Texas (onsite) – relocation package included (if needed)
We are seeking a Product Development Engineer to support the development and execution of physical consumer products, with a strong focus on mechanical design, refinement, and production readiness.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in the later stages of product development—translating concepts into manufacturable designs and ensuring products are optimized for production. You will play a key role in unblocking bottlenecks in the refinement phase and helping bring products successfully to market.
Responsibilities
Own the refinement and development phase of products, ensuring designs are ready for manufacturing
Translate early concepts into detailed CAD models, assemblies, and technical drawings
Drive Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) efforts
Partner closely with internal teams and external manufacturers to ensure production feasibility and quality
Support prototyping, testing, and iteration to validate product performance and manufacturability
Collaborate with suppliers and factories (including overseas partners) on tooling, materials, and production processes
Identify and resolve engineering challenges during development and pre-production
Qualifications
3–7 years of experience in product development, mechanical design, or engineering
Experience working on physical consumer products (housewares, cookware, appliances, or similar)
Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (or similar 3D CAD software)
Hands-on experience with DFM / DFA
Experience with manufacturing processes
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with housewares, cookware, or kitchen products
Experience working with overseas manufacturing partners
Familiarity with prototyping and testing processes
