Job Summary

An Assistant Principal aids in developing academic programs, participates in hiring and training teachers and learning coaches, and attends to executive responsibilities such as scheduling, data management, testing, compliance, and report writing. An Assistant Principal also maintains positive relationships with parents and students and may represent their school at community and civic events.
Essential Functions Of The Job
- Participates in the development and evaluation of educational programs and encourages and supports the development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate, and promotes the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.
- Promotes a positive, caring climate for learning, deals sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds,
- and communicates effectively with students and staff.
- Implements school wide discipline, including meeting with parents, students, and staff. Creates success plans and behavior plans for select students and supports all parties with the execution of the plan.
- Participates in the development of campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.
- Supports the development, maintenance, and use of information systems and records to track progress towards campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.
- Observes employee performance, records observations, and conducts evaluation conferences. Serves as an appraiser for designated teacher appraisal system.
- Assists the Principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.
- Supervises operations in the Principal’s absence and helps plan daily school activities by participating in developing class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.
- Implements a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.
- Ensures that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
- Conducts conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.
- Demonstrates awareness of the school community's needs and initiates activities to meet them. Uses appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement. Articulates the school’s mission to the community and solicits the community to accomplish goals..
- Ensures all data used in state, federal, and school reporting requirements is accurate and is a clear reflection of Desert View Schools.
- Participates in parent/teacher meetings and attends other meetings as needed.
- All other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field; Master’s degree preferred
- IVP Level 1 DPS issued Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 50% of the time.
- Must be able to move quickly to a location, as necessary, to respond to needs.
- Must be able to operate a computer and other electronic devices that require repetitive motions.
- Must be able to position self to assist staff, students, or perform other duties as assigned.
- Will regularly perform duties that require repetitive motion.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in both the spoken and written word. Communication involves listening, observing, and sharing thoughts and ideas.
- May need to transport boxes, computer equipment, and any other equipment necessary to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
- Will be working in a setting with exposure to fluorescent lighting and other elements typical in a school setting. Will also be exposed to outdoor elements while performing job responsibilities outside.
