We are seeking dependable and motivated Underground Utility Crew Members to support directional drilling, locating, and underground fiber installation operations. This role contributes to safe trenchless installation, protection of existing utilities, and overall jobsite productivity.
Position Overview
The Underground Utility Crew Member supports horizontal directional drilling (HDD), locating, conduit placement, and fiber installation activities. Working alongside operators, locators, and supervisors, this position ensures accurate bore path execution, equipment readiness, and adherence to safety standards.
This role is hands-on and field-based, requiring physical endurance, communication, and the ability to adapt to fast-paced project environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with confirming bore paths alongside supervisors and locators
- Locate and track drill heads using electronic locating equipment
- Communicate depth, pitch, and directional adjustments to operators
- Operate or assist with operation of drills, mini-excavators, and support equipment
- Set up and stage jobsite equipment and reel trailers
- Perform potholing and support utility expose operations
- Identify utilities and maintain required clearances
- Monitor drilling conditions and report hazards or deviations
- Transport and place conduit materials safely
- Handle and install fiber reels and fiber cable in conduit
- Set pedestals and vaults accurately
- Read and interpret blueprints, bore plans, and utility maps
- Maintain documentation of bore paths and as-built information
- Maintain communication with team members throughout the workday
- Follow OSHA, company, and jobsite safety requirements
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Experience in underground construction, HDD support, locating, or telecom installation preferred
- Knowledge of underground utility processes and safety practices
- Ability to interpret construction prints and bore profiles
- Valid driver’s license required
- Class A CDL preferred
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus
- Strong teamwork, communication, and work ethic
- Flexibility to travel to project locations
Education
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred
- Vocational training or military experience a plus
Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting
- Lift and carry up to 75 lbs
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Navigate uneven terrain and confined areas
- Use required PPE at all times
Work Environment
- Outdoor construction job sites with exposure to dust, noise, and equipment hazards
- Work performed with minimal supervision
- Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks
- Overtime as required based on workload
