What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Accountant position at Derks Financial?
We're a small tax advisory firm that values accuracy over volume. Our return count isn't huge, but the work is sophisticated—multi-state corporate returns, trusts/estates, and clients with moving parts. We use Lacerte and run a calm, professional shop.
What you'll do
- Prepare and review 1120/1120-S/1065/1041 (and occasional 1040s with complex K-1s).
- Handle multi-state filings: apportionment, addbacks, composite returns, and filing strategies.
- Research tricky issues (S-corp basis & at-risk, 754/743(b), 338(h)(10), grantor vs. complex trust, fiduciary accounting vs tax, etc.) and document client notes.
- Coordinate with clients and our team to gather docs without drama; keep the file audit-ready.
What makes you a fit
- Have filed at least a few thousand tax returns over your career
- Proven trusts & estates experience (Form 1041, 706 familiarity a plus).
- Comfortable with multi-state corporate/flow-through returns and K-1 implications.
- Lacerte fluency (not mandatory)
- Clear communicator who can translate tax into normal human language.
- Organized, detail-obsessed, and calm under deadlines (without the "80-hour weeks" culture - we rarely go over 40 ).
Work style & hours
- Low volume, high complexity. We plan ahead so busy season is more smooth. Aside from the week of 4/15 and 9/15 we're typically out at 4pm.
- Typically, 8:30am to 4pm outside of tax deadlines
- Onsite - no remote
