General Maintenance Helper
Job Description
Purpose: The General Maintenance Helper maintains school buildings and
grounds in top condition to ensure full and productive use of district
facilities. To accomplish these tasks, the General Maintenance
Helper must work closely with the staff and administration of Derby
Public Schools.
Responsible to: Maintenance Supervisor
Salary: Maintenance Hourly Rate Schedule, Level 3
Classification of Employment: Non-Exempt
Date: July 2019
Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Knowledge of plumbing and maintenance systems.
3. Valid Kansas driver’s license.
Essential Functions:
1. Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
a. Maintain school buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure full and
productive use of district facilities.
b. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district.
c. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
d. Appropriately operate all equipment and machinery as necessary.
e. Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations.
2. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
a. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
b. Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push
heavy objects or materials.
c. Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching.
d. Requires climbing and balancing.
e. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors year-round.
f. Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
g. Must be able to work in and around dust, fumes and odors.
h. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
i. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
General Responsibilities:
1. Assist in maintaining school buildings and grounds in top condition.
2. Assist in promoting the safety, health, and comfort of students and employees in
school buildings and grounds.
3. Maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in all maintenance
and repair projects.
4. Perform maintenance, repair, and installation in connection with plumbing and
special systems.
5. Move equipment and materials within and between school buildings.
6. Assist in snow removal from school district building walkways, entrances and
parking areas.
7. Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
8. Other duties as assigned by the maintenance supervisor, which are consistent
with the general requirements, and qualifications of the position.
