Description

Derby Academy seeks a skilled, compassionate, and highly organized person to serve as the Summer Programs Health Care Supervisor for its licensed summer programs. This role is responsible for protecting the health and safety of campers and staff, delivering nursing care, overseeing medication administration and health documentation, and supporting compliance with Massachusetts recreational camp health regulations and Derby’s Summer Health Care Plan.

The Summer Programs Health Care Supervisor is a key member of the summer leadership team and serves as the primary health authority on site during program operations, Monday through Friday, 8:30-4:30. This position combines direct care, prevention, communication, training, documentation, and operational readiness in order to maintain a safe, supportive, and positive camp environment. Derby's Summer Programs run June 22 through August 7, with additional preseason and post-program responsibilities as needed.

Essential Responsibilities

Health Care Delivery and Clinical Judgment

  • Provide direct care to campers and staff, including first aid, assessment of illness and injury, triage, treatment within scope of licensure, and follow-up care.
  • Respond to routine and emergency medical situations, including coordinating with families, emergency responders, health care providers, and camp leadership as needed.
  • Serve as the primary medical authority on site during assigned hours and make sound clinical decisions consistent with professional standards, standing orders, and camp policies.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans and accommodations for campers with identified health needs, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, and other chronic or acute conditions.

Health Records, Licensing, and Compliance

  • Collect, review, maintain, and monitor camper and staff health records to ensure compliance with Derby procedures and Massachusetts camp licensing requirements.
  • Verify that required forms, physical examinations, immunization records, medication authorizations, and other health documentation are complete and current before and during the camp season.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential health documentation, including health office visit logs, treatment records, medication administration records, incident documentation, and other required camp health forms.
  • Support implementation of the camp’s Summer Health Care Plan and applicable standing orders in collaboration with camp leadership and the designated Health Care Consultant, as applicable.
  • Ensure documentation and reporting of health issues, serious injuries, communicable disease concerns, and other reportable incidents in accordance with camp policy and regulatory requirements.

Medication Management

  • Receive, review, organize, secure, and administer camper medications in accordance with physician orders, camp procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain secure storage of medications and health supplies, including appropriate locked storage and controlled access.
  • Oversee medication administration records and related documentation.
  • Prepare medications, emergency supplies, and instructions for field trips or off-site activities as needed, and train or guide designated staff on approved procedures.

Prevention, Training, and Communication

  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with families regarding illness, injury, medication issues, required follow-up care, and return-to-camp decisions.
  • Collaborate with the Director, coordinators, counselors, food service personnel, and other staff to communicate relevant health needs while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Serve as a resource to summer staff on health, safety, wellness, communicable disease prevention, allergy awareness, emergency response, and mandated reporting responsibilities.
  • Participate in preseason planning and staff training related to medication procedures, emergency response, AED/EpiPen awareness, documentation expectations, and camper health needs.

Health Office and Program Support

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked health office.
  • Inventory and replenish medical supplies, first aid kits, emergency medications, and related equipment across camp locations.
  • Assist with development or refinement of camp health forms, logs, reference binders, and operational systems that support safe program delivery.
  • Participate in the life of the camp community and contribute to a calm, welcoming, child-centered environment.

Requirements

  • Current Massachusetts licensure as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical nurse is preferred, but not required.
  • CPR/BLS certification required.
  • Experience in pediatric, school, camp, public health, or community health nursing preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Strong knowledge of medication administration, documentation, infection control, and child health needs.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with camp leadership and staff.
  • Commitment to professionalism, flexibility, sound judgment, and a positive camp culture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a Massachusetts recreational camp setting.
  • Familiarity with camp health records, standing orders, and summer health care planning.
  • Experience training sta ff or supporting health-related operational systems.

Physical And Employment Requirements

  • Must be able to move throughout a multi-building campus and respond promptly to emergencies in indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Must be able to provide required employment (eligible to work in the U.S.A.), health, and onboarding documentation.
  • Must comply with all Derby Academy employment requirements and all applicable summer program health and safety regulations.
  • Must be able to successfully pass all required background checks in accordance with Massachusetts law including CORI, SORI and National Fingerprinting.
