Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
The SQL Database Administrator II position (K0227357) will design, implement, and maintain new SQL Server databases. Modify existing databases and database management systems or work directly with programmers and analysts to make these changes. Test database related programs and databases, correct errors and make necessary modifications. Specify users and user access levels for each database. Design, develop, implement and maintain SSIS packages. Work on data acquisition, data import, data export and data management activities. Manage physical database resources to include: assist in installation and specify initial installation options; perform database software maintenance; review and monitor system and instance resources to insure continuous database operations (i.e. database storage, memory, CPU, network usage, and I/O contention); and upgrade/migrate databases to current release levels.
Serve as a back Oracle database administrator. Cross train the Oracle database administrator to learn the SQL Server administration duties and skills. Design, implement, and maintain new Oracle Server databases. Modify existing databases and database management systems or work directly with programmers and analysts to make these changes. Test database related programs and databases, correct errors and make necessary modifications. Specify users and user access levels for each database. Design, develop, implement and maintain Oracle jobs. Work on data acquisition, data import, data export and data management activities. Manage physical database resources to include: assist in installation and specify initial installation options; perform database software maintenance; review and monitor system and instance resources to insure continuous database operations (i.e. database storage, memory, CPU, network usage, and I/O contention); and upgrade/migrate databases to current release levels.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Direct and monitor the work of the junior DBA position. Train the JDBA as needed and report progress and performance to supervisor.
- Plan, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard information in computer files against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification or disclosure.
- Approve, schedule, plan and supervise the installation and testing of new products and improvements to computer systems such as the installation of new databases. Monitor database performance and take steps, when necessary, to improve performance. Implement, maintain, and test backup and recovery strategies.
- Review procedures for making changes in database management systems manuals. Review project requests describing database user needs to estimate time and costs required to accomplish projects. Train users and answer questions.
- Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate: A valid Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate is a condition of employment for all employees of the State of Kansas. Qualifications
- Education:
- High School, GED
- Licensing & Certification:
- Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of 24 hours in computer science coursework or certification and three years experience designing/analyzing, coding, testing, debugging database programs or system software programming and analysis or four years experience designing/analyzing, coding, testing, debugging database programs or system software programming and analysis.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- 4 years direct experience with Information Technology or computer information systems.
- 2 years direct experience with Information Technology or computer information systems.
- Microsoft Office
- Proofreading, editing, attention to detail

- SQL Server 2000+, T-SQL, Oracle
- Organizational skills

- At least 3-5 years of experience with Oracle and SQL Server 2000+.
- Expert in Microsoft SQL Server 2000+ administration.
- Expert in relational database design.
- Very knowledgeable with writing SQL Queries.
- Strong knowledge of writing Stored Procedures.
- Knowledge of database driven Internet applications.
- Very knowledgeable in SSIS.
